Pendescu is a small castle on a rocky hill 476 meters across the Acrocorinth.
History
The castle was built by the Franks in 1205, within a few months, to facilitate the siege of the Acrocorinth which was "the largest and strongest of the fortresses in Greece", which Kontoglou also says.
Acrocorinth was held by the last Byzantine ruler, Leo Sgouros, who in the chaotic period following the fall of Constantinople (1204) had established an independent "kingdom" that included Argos, Corinth, Attica and Boeotia. However, after the Frankish invasion, the only castle left was Acrocorinth.
At first the Franks' clan was not as suffocating and Sgouros was able to receive supplies and reinforcements and launch unexpected counterattacks. One of the ways the Franks thought of restraining him was to build this castle.
Eventually, the close siege left Sgouros desperate to commit suicide in 1208 with his horse falling from the Acrocorinthian rock. The Acrocorinth eventually surrendered to the Franks due to a shortage of supplies in 1209. This meant the complete dominance of the Franks and the effective start of the Frankish rule in Greece.
Later, with the outbreak of the 1821 revolution, one of the first actions of the Greek militants was to besiege Acrocorinth by seizing the surrounding hills, including Pendescu.
Pendescu is identified by some as "Mount Eskouve", which is mentioned in the Chronicle of Morea and was built for the same purpose. According to this theory, because the hill was very steep, the Franks named it Monte Escuvee, which in Chronicle was referred to as Mount Escuvee, and became a Pentecost after corruption.
This is not excluded, but in the Castro we think that Mount Escuvee was probably another castle above Attica, which we present on another page.
The prevailing view is that Penthescu was not used after the Franks occupied the Acrocorinth. But the details of the construction indicate that the castle was "dulled" and therefore reused in some later, probably Venetian (if judged by the fine masonry) era, and probably by the Ottomans. In any case, it would serve as a stronghold of the main castle, the Acrocorinth.
