Well that was insane powers I never expected from a drill. For as long as I can remember I have used an impact to drive large fasteners. Thanks to social media I tried a drill and I wasn’t disappointed!! What’s your opinion on this?

12 years ago the tool salesman said that all the timber framers were using Makita 18v drills to drive big screws because it was so much quicker than the impacts. He said its a little hard on them but since they have a 3 year warranty they just keep bringing them back.

The thing with impact drivers is that they save the wrists from a lot of torque. But on the other hand, using a regular drill saves the hands from a lot of vibration.

I still have my old man's red corded Makita. I'm almost as old as he was when he bought it, used.

On long screws like this one, drills are faster than impacts because the screw acts as a torsion spring/damper, effectively cancelling out a lot of the impact forces, they just bounc back through the screw. Only advantage here is that its easier on your wrist.

Back in the day all there was, was drills. Impacts came out took over applications like this. They got better and better over time. Lately the drills have been making big jumps in improvements and can now do certain things as well or better than impacts. I believe that we need both to make construction/builders of things work and to have our tools last longer. When you have the right tool for the job things work out better and last longer also go faster.

Been an electrician for 25 years and I am sick of impacts being used so much. Idiots use them on fine thread metal screws for receptacles, lights, panel covers, etc, and strip them out every time.

Note it was on “2” which is less torque more speed. Love my makita battery tools.

Don’t worry screw, you’ll get credit someday. Just ask drill bit, millwalkee stole his thunder.

I routinely drill with an impact and drive with drill. Both are better at the other ones job. Drilling holes with a drill kicks when it binds, an impact doesn’t. A drill has constant torque which drives in screws faster than a pulsing impact. It’s science.

I like these demonstrations where the wood is actually being used not the ones where they just drill in to the wood and throw it away

Big structural screws, brushless premium drills are the way to go. Came across this years ago driving 10” structural screws to attach lvls on the flat to the underside of 100+ year old fir timbers. We were using all kinds of cordless and corded impacts. It was taking forever. Finally tried using my Metabo drill and it was sinking the heads into the lvls. Quicker and without all the noise.

On harder materials use the drill handle, your gonna need it.

I was brought into makita at a young age by my family being tradesman. now I’m an cell tower tech for Verizon and we were working on a tower with a ground fault so there was a short to the mass pipe the second you touched metal on the impact the Milwaukee would die but the makita over voltage protection is unparalleled.
My makita grinder worked up there my impact worked and anything that wasn’t makita (Milwaukee) had its battery fried immediately.
People forget Makita is the best it’s the most expensive for a reason.

Makita always been the best. I still have a corded hammer drill from Makita. I only use it when absolutely necessary since it damn near breaks your wrists.

That’s the quality and power of Makita.

Drills are also better for stainless screws like the t10 grt rt trims. it doesnt chew up the softer stainless heads.
