I could see the Thermal Pads, being used for like just Testing before applying Thermal Paste. Like, in a Computer Shop, or a Shop like yours. So dont have to waste the Paste and could have like a Reusable Thermal Pad until everything is ready for final build, then use the Paste.

Having these for test-benches is a great idea. It saves so much time.

The ptm7950 pad decreased temps of my steam deck by around 10°c, you just have to ensure its properly installed without any air bubbles and you have to „burn it in“ (use it under heavy load) for 1-2 hours. Refrigerate it for 10-30min for easier application (the plastic cover will come off easier)

Thermal pads are mostly used in places where you need to assemble a lot of PCs, to not fuck around with thermal paste every time

Think it depends on brand, material, manufacturing process. I was just reading through an article published a few months ago. It was comparing Thermal Grizzly KryoSheet against TG Kryonaut, and Arctic MX 4 & 6. It was applied to a GPU, RX 7900 XTX. It (pad) was neck and neck with the pastes, and even managed to pull just slightly ahead at max power. (Within margin of error)

There's certainly a lot of factors and variables that can alter the outcome. Direct die vs IHS, mounting pressure/torque, ect..

From what I've seen in some reviews/test lately it's a pretty safe option and lower maintenance. Only real deterrent would be power users running flagship components and overclocking.

thermal pads are usually placed on gpus to avoid "bump-out", its when thermal paste gets squished away from the center of the heatsink till there is none left

Test both thermal paste and a thermal pad on top of the pate

I think we all agree we have more than one thermal paste tube, they are all missing somewhere we just can’t find them yet.

That thermal pad is probably better for lower performance chips that don’t have heat spreaders like in laptop GPUs! :)

That's only for the graphite pad that you showed. The Honeywell ptm7950 outperforms thermal paste. You just need to find a genuine supply as it's counterfeitted. LTT has a vid on it. Also, even with the worsened graphite pad performance, you never have to change it and it's reusable.

As a former chip tester for Intel. We use thermal pads. Cuz it does not leave a mess everytime we need to take it out of the test bench. That's the only reason why.

1-3c is margin of error. I'll take it.

I got sick of replacing the thermal paste on my ps4 pro every month cause of pump out so I got the thermal grizzly carbonount pad, put nail polish around the die so it doesn’t short out, put heat sinks on the memory chips and hdmi chip and replaced the fan with a apparently quieter one.. we shall see if it stays quiet this time.

Well it also depends on the pad manufacturer how good it is, there are allot of different versions of them. But yeah they are not better then paste but atleast for testing no issues with repaste cpu all the time. And the 2-3 degree diff does not matter much for normal use and gaming.

Generally thermal pads are for extremely low power machines, or at least low heat output, such as passive heat dissipation machines for use in places in which the air contains debris that you don’t want in the machine. Say a machine shop that has metal particles floating about.

Because such machines typically have extremely small jobs, such as passing information onto a CNC router, they don’t output much heat, and can get away with passive heat dissipation, so no airflow from outside in, though there may be air being circulated inside- and a thermal pad used because it doesn’t dry out, it’s performance is pretty steady throughout a decade, which means they can use the device with no physical maintenance for a decade or two, as opposed to it shorting within a few years due to metal shavings getting sent inside by fans.

It’s not a competitor to paste, it’s an alternative.

I use vascline as thermal paste. Works good for me.

No one wants to have to deal with the computer of elderly or someone's very old computer even if it's not running hot, if the paste won't dry from the heat natural dehydration from time probably will if it won't then it's a thermal pad.

Thermal grizzly carbonaut is extremely expensive. Especially the big 38cm size for Am4 cpu.

They are also used to cool down GPU vram

These thermal pads are used for gpus with multiple dies like hbm GPUs like rx fury series, vega, radeon 7, Nvidia titan v and rx 7000 series as it allows for conformance. Its why amd uses these.
