Birds Bizarre Anting Behavior
Показать описание
This bird is covered with ants, and you might be thinking, is it being eaten by the ants? Some birds have bizarre and unique behaviors. They deliberately let ants cover them to clean their feathers, and this behavior is known as "anting."Ants secrete a chemical called formic acid as a defense mechanism. While it might seem dangerous, birds take advantage of it. The acid works as a natural insecticide, killing or repelling parasites and mites that might be living in the bird's feathers. So, this bird is actually getting a spa treatment!Sometimes, the birds crush the ants first to release more of the acid. They seem to tolerate the ants without issue, as they are adapted to this interaction. It’s definitely one of the most bizarre sights in the animal kingdom!
