Cats do it too for flea management. But sometimes they just let ants strip patches of their hair and they don’t care because they’re so itchy. They don’t even care if they get bit a few dozen times. I saw a stray cat that would lay in the ants and take a nap and then wake up and roll around until she got them off. I caught her and took her to the vet and they said she had fleas. But even after the flea and tick treatment she would still do it. Turns out she had a very itchy skin condition. And she’d let the ants bite off all the scabbing and dead skin etc. until there were open wounds. We had to give her regular baths with sensitive soaps and lotions and keep her in the house after that. She was struggling to survive outside. Some people think cats can be outside and should be or whatever, but there are a lot of reasons why they shouldn’t be. Luckily she didn’t get kitty AIDS. It was a kind of plaque psoriasis I think. I don’t remember what the vet called it.

The first bird is NOT anting, in fact there’s a strong possibility that it’s a chick. I’ve seen this before and those ants are trying to eat him alive. They’ll start with his eyes. Birds who are anting will allow multiple ants on them, but never swarms. This bird also isn’t antagonizing the ants or dusting himself, he’s stumbling abnormally and has an open mouth (which the ants will attempt to enter). I hope somebody didn’t confuse dying for anting…
