There are worse things than being dead. As these Americans showed. One's Dignity and compassion for others are just two of these.

After a bit of digging i found out that amers foort netherlands was a concentration camp, and the this actually happened to uzbeks, (soviet pows) not americans. The more you know.

I've never heard nor read of this incident. And that's after being a student of WW2 history for the last half century. It sounds more like something the Nazis cooked up against Soviet prisoners.

Sorry about injecting the facts into a good story but the soldiers in question were Uzbekies fighting for the Soviet Army captured in the Netherlands in 1942. The Nazis wanted to make a propaganda film of undisciplined barbarians, starving them for 3 days and then gave them bread which as the story correctly tells they civily divided amongst themselves and consumed, thereby thwarting the propaganda film. Sadly as the story relates, they were executed following the propaganda disaster.

Great job I have something to add my Uncle Hugh 106 th division was captured by Nazis during the BOB along with most of the Division. He was held in rail cars with little or nothing to eat most were starving but it did not destroy his humanity When asked about his time as a POW he said “ We all starved the guards didn’t have much more than us “

I've found reference to Soviet (specifically Uzbek) soldiers being shot at Amerfoort, but not Americans. The story sounds much more like something the Germans would have done to the Soviets, not to the western allies.

We treated them well & often the German captives were astonished by getting hot food, cots & blankets with sheets in captivity

There were German POW camps in South Texas. The German soldiers "shocked" their captors by being hardworking and respectful. After awhile they were even given weekend passes to frequent a local bordello. After the war many of the Germans stayed and married Texans.

I was stationed in Holland in the 70s close to Amersfoort. I went there quite a bit and interacted with many families, and they never mentioned this to me.

And that is why there were the Nuremberg Judgements.

My grandfather was a prisoner of war. When he first got to the camp weevils in the gro. At first he said who disgusting. Then he said later protein . But then the food rations got worse... But it gave them hope they understood the war was coming to an end. Because they knew the Americans were winning. Making it harder on the Germans food supply
. Which gave hope.

Where are they buried, how many were there. Who recorded the account? I would like to read about it.

Your dignity and autonomy are expendable. Reminds me of the HOA I left behind.

Americans aren't perfect. That greatest generation of Americans knew that the well being of the team is greater than that of one person. They were shot, but it showed the Nazis what they were up against.

From my reading of WW2 in high school and later on watching the miniseries "World At War" and other books on the subject the Germans had a greater respect for American, British and Canadian soldiers. Actually considered them as fellow warriors, but they considered soldiers who fought for the Soviet Union as lowlifes and undeserving of treatment as human beings. That's why when the Soviet forces recaptured their territory from the Germans and later captured the eastern half of Germany they were intensely brutal against the Germans. After the Russians retook Stalingrad from the Germans and captured over 100, 000 German troops, only about 6, 000 Germans survived as prisoners to return home to Germany.

i thought they did this with russian soldiers, not Americans

This does not sound very believable. Western Allies prisoners were treated according to the Geneva convention.

And now you know why the Canadian soldiers were so brutal towards Germans
