1. Visualisation (Daydream specific things you want to achieve with your project)
2. Solve with tuning, not with features (make better what you already have rather than adding new stuff)
3. Stay organized
4. Have an accountability buddy (tell him about your project and promise him you'll do something if don't finish it)
5. Keep it simple (don't make the next super mega uber MMO RPG, manage a game's scope)
6. This is a bonus one, so better watch the video)

I'm still in school so I'm not actually doing professional stuff but I spend lots of time on projects, and one tip I've realized is to not work on one tedious, difficult or boring thing for a long stretch of time but to work on a couple vastly different things each day. Like if I'm working on something more tedious like menus, spend some time doing that as well as some time doing stuff you enjoy more. It keeps you excited to work on the fun stuff but you'll still have to do some work on the boring bit. Plus it makes me feel like I accomplish more each day. Anyway that's what works for me.

Great video! One thing I will say, however, going from my own personal experience, is that thinking big in terms of big idea, big game isn’t always a bad thing! Sure, it may seem overwhelming to take on a big project, but cut it down, hit small milestones along the way, and eventually you’ll get there. Seeing a big game come to life via the smaller points first helps continue the ambition and passion you have, too. I say this because I started my game in 2018, and now have funding from my publisher which I signed a contract with at the start of this year … This is partially due to commitment and drive, and also the results of this were evident in the social media community growing from self marketing I did too. But it was because of the project, the scale, the depth in its design, etc, that I felt really motivated to build it up and showcase the dev work as I’ve gone along! So I’d say if you do have a big idea for a game, go for it, but break it down and foremost, be PASSIONATE about the work! One thing Thomas mentions in another video: if you were happy with just a brick being given to you at the end of development, would you still pursue game dev, or the project you’re working on? If yes, full steam ahead :)

I go in big spurts of development right now I'm pushing to finish my game by December. Don't get overwhelmed is my main mantra. I finally got the majority of the game done and it inspires me to finish it because I've never made a game this large before. It will be my first "real" game. Want to prove to my wife that I can finish a project. Another thing motivating me is that once I finish I can focus on my next games! I have 2 tiny games i want to make and then focus on my next big project.

Im not very good at making games but I love doing it. My games backbone is put together with duct tape, but at least it will work!

Hi there Thomas, Leonardo F Fraga here \o/
Jacksepticeye once said that you're a "genuine dude". I'm not from USA, I don't quite know what that means, but got me thinking.... And I really like your video, bunch of helpful and inspiring things, but what truly shines is yourself, your personality... Our body language speaks a lot.
Now I think I know the meaning of "genuine dude", and it's the reason I keep coming back to watch and like your videos.
Soon enough I'll comment a link to the trailer of my first game, and "dude", you helped. God bless you.

If your parents or friends aren't proud of you or aren't currently helping you through your video game making process, that's not a healthy relationship. You shouldn't also be making a game to 'prove someone wrong.'

You should be doing it because you love doing it.

You always produce top notch videos, Thomas. It's really awesome that you talk about real issues with development in a very relate-able way. I'm willing to bet that some of your videos have been the inspiration for many small indies that drove them to actually make their game and put it out for the world to see. Great stuff.

I have an idea for a game, and I started working on it only because of you. You inspired me and made me believe that I can do it. I always wanted to make a game, but I've stopped myself with bad thoughts like : "I can't" "I am not creative enough" "I will never be able to learn programs I need" and so on.
When I presented my idea to different people, there are different opinions.
From "wow, amazing. Can't wait to play this"
To ... " I wouldn't let my child play this"
Only because it has a sad theme..

The moment when you can say a random person on street that, open playstore that's my game, the moment you are in a devloper job interview, you tell the interviewer to open the store and see it .

The moment your nephew can pull up the switch and say to his friends my uncle made it.

That's when you win

I haven't started on my personal game projects yet but saw this as one of your videos and said "why not?"
Then I saw Rick, who I'm taking a course under right now! What an unexpected cool melding of gamer dudes I respect.

Divide and conquer is a good tip too. In the first phase of a game, my focus is to finish a prototype, not the game. Next, it would be to release a trailer, then a DEMO (just examples). This way, you have smaller checkpoints to be proud of.
