Long-Range Target Shooting

I think long-range target shooting is just a wonderful sport. If you enjoy that sort of thing, go for it man. It's a lot of fun. I enjoy it myself from time to time and it is. It really helps out the industry because it has increased interest so much. You got to understand that these days it's more difficult to go hunting.

They're just fewer places to go. It's harder to get tags and licenses. So, if, I think if we had to depend on selling rifles just for hunting, we'd be in kind of big trouble here. So the idea that folks are interested in target shooting really helps keep the industry alive.

Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

I think innovations in long-range precision shooting filter into hunting designs.

In 20-years, a person’s hunting rifle will look less like the classic Winchester and more like light-weight versions of today’s PRS rifles.

Good points Ron. Antler obsession or trophy hunting is slowly but surely killing hunting as a whole. Access, new hunter recruitment, and license sales are nose diving. I am curious to see what the next 20 years bring to us in the midwest, because this antler obsession is not sustainable. We need more land stewardship with a focus on all wildlife and not just growing the biggest buck. We need more trappers, predator balance, and a renewed focus on the value of all hunting-not just deer.

Long range target shooting. Is such a demanding sport. That I don't believe that many people are able to do it. What it helps. Is showing why big calibers are legal. My brother didn't understand why anyone would be able to have a. 50 bmg. When I told him about the distances people were shooting. He then understood that they weren't used for crime.
