My mom used to paint when she was in college, she had a lot of cheap brushes and 3 really expensive ones, those 3 brushes still exist and I use them, my mom went to college 25 years ago.

I have seen so many brushes die at the hands of my classmates during art class.

I’ve been painting for about a year and a half now and always wondered if I should invest more in my brushes. Most of mine are from Walmart and about 7 (expensive) ones from Michaels and it’s true, you can’t really tell a difference 🤔 super helpful video! Thanks!

Round and flat brushes are staples but I find mop brushes and fan brushes quite useful

Few points worth mentioning:
1. long handle vs short handle - long one is (mostly) for 'on the easel' painting - you don't want to smudge the painting with your hand while painting - and it's useful in i.e. impressionism if you don't need a lot of control
2. there is a difference between cheap and expensive brushes in quality of materials - and as an old saying goes: the cunning man loses twice - you can spend much more money buying cheap brushes and throwing them away constantly...

I got a really bad set of cheap brushes. I started learning to use paint a few days ago (I mainly do digital art and formerly used alcohol markers) and bought a cheap brush set from a bookstore/stationary store. The hairs kept falling out and I have to use pliers to clamp down the front of the metal piece. It still sheds hair but much lesser than it originally did and you can bet that I'm never buying cheap brushes from a book store again. I'll just go to a proper art supply store and hopefully the sets there are better. Also thanks for this video. It was really helpful especially as a noob to painting. (I was so bad with paint when learning art in school)

I used to be very skeptical of really cheap paintbrushes. But about a week ago, in the local department store that sells really cheap school, office, and art supplies (I mean really cheap, my grandma got a ballpen that is usually 3 to 5 cents for about 1 cent, no joke; she bought two and regretted not getting 50), as I was buying a set of gouache (since I ran out of white paint, shocker), I happened to notice that right next to the watercolors and gouache, they had sets of brushes. The first time I bought a set of gouache there was around the last two weeks of March so most of their shelves weren't fully stocked anymore, so I wasn't surprised when these appeared (most stores generally restock their shelves at the beginning of the month).

But what surprised me was when I looked for a package with the price tag not sticked onto the seal so I can check the brushes, and low and behold, they seemed pretty good. So I bought two sets, one set of fan brushes (mostly because I've been wanting to try following one of Bob Ross' videos), and a set of three round and three flat brushes.

I don't use the round ones as much because its shape is pretty rough, they seems to be trimmed by hand and wasn't really cut with the upside down teardrop shape (found another set with good shaped rounds earlier, though). But I use the flat brushes and they don't shed and they seem pretty stable!

The fan brush set was about 1.10 dollars while the set of round and flats were 0.90. My grandma bought me another set of six round brushes (we were going to get the set of flat brushes since I had enough round brushes but I couldn't find them) which was also around 0.90.

NOTE: I'm not from the US. These are rough conversions so most readers of this comment will get the price range.

I am against animal cruelty for sure, but the best watercolor brushes are made from squirrel and red sable. Horse is even soft and I use a blend by Princeton which are considered affordable. I have a hard time believing that you have quality brushes you do not use. and you can say there is no difference. I have affordable quality and cheap brushes and I surely can feel the difference. Use the best you can afford, always, if you are serious about the best results. I am not cheap, but frugal. There is a difference. I just bought Holbein gouache which will last me a year for 35 bucks. It's the best money can buy. Why buy cheap over and over? That's no savings.

Thank you for your informative videos. I love painting but I'm very skeptical about it because I'm colorblind. So far I've heard good things about my work though. Keep up the great content :)
