Rover.com House Sitting Gone Bad

Luckily our pets were OK when we came home. Our two dogs had pooped and peed all over our 100+ year old hardwood floors because she was there so seldomly. This is unheard of for our dogs. Luckily, the cats could go out their cat door.

So sad and unfortunate that this happened to you. As a dog parent myself, I could not have felt comfortable leaving my dog with someone like this woman. You noticed the red flags and still gave her an opportunity.

The problem with not leaving a review is that other people will hire the sitter from hell and the cycle will repeat itself until that sitter is STOPPED!

As a Rover sitter, I'm so sorry you not only had two horror stories, but that Rover was useless after the fact. I looked at their big 'guarantee' recently and discovered that if I got injured on the job, their insurance doesn't cover me either. I'm glad your babies are okay now though! Your video was very enlightening; thank you so much for sharing your story.

Rover does not cover us sitters as well. My husband got bit by one of the dogs we were boarding at our home and they told us they don't cover injuries. Which is why I carry pet sitter insurance to cover client's home, pets, and ourselves.

Not leaving a negative review perpetuates this type of activity

Aw man I'm sorry you had this experience. Rover is such a gamble. I just hit the 100 review marker this week. Most experiences have been positive but the few bad ones always, always overpower the others. It's crazy how little the support team does when "settling" actual matters between client and sitter.

I am shocked Rover told you to contact the sitter for a refund that's something they should have complete control over. I hope to god i never experience that level of incompetence.

Cameras are a must these days.

Rover offers a meet and greet with any potential new sitters. I always request that before hiring a new sitter that way I can go over my expectations with them. It has been very helpful and I've been lucky to get some good people.

Remember if you do get good service, tip them well. Rover takes 20% on every service!

I am so glad to find videos like this! No wonder my cat was saying No when I was considering sitters on Rover. Thanks so much for this video and also please make sure you don't allow those kinds of people in your home again!

Fair review. They are independent contractors and I'm unsure if they do a good job clarifying that. The good news is they have insurance that sitters can use to get vet care for your pet if something were to happen. I just started my sitter profile. This was helpful to hear. Thank you.

I would've left a negative review for that first person.

Not leaving a negative review not only keeps other pet owners in the dark about the true qualities of the sitter. But it also tells the sitter that they did nothing wrong, thus encouraging and/or justifying the behavior.

Good review. I JUST signed up as a sitter and am appalled at what those dogs went through.

I'm disappointed at how ROVER policy handled your situation... We are per parents and always looking out for plan B... They're out for profit not for compassion.. Thanks for the updates and glad your kids, pets are OK 🙏🎈

That is horrible!! I feel so bad for you and especially your pets. This is why I don’t trust people with my two dogs. I love animals and for people to neglect any animal or especially abuse (I know your dogs were not thank God) is disgraceful. So sorry you and your pets went through this horrible experiences. 😢

Also part of house sitting is making sure that the house is cleaned especially before the owners come home and I have left left their house just the way when they left it or sometimes even better depending I clean up after myself I clean up after the animals and I took out the garbage when it was supposed to go out I pick up the mail I even watered their plants so I did a multitask so I’ve been raised with animals on my life and I’m the main caregiver and all of them and Rover does do background checks mine is an enhanced background check so I can’t imagine how these people got into doing Rover if they don’t seem like they really know how to take care of them I mean it’s not just coming in and just watching now you have to actually be active with them that means they throw up or vomit you have to clean it up all the pain in the house and 10 times most of them don’t do that if you let them out enough and when they need to go out in my experience I let them out a lot plus I walked them sometimes three times a day depending on the weather so they don’t have an opportunity to really do anything inside the house

We just signed to work with Rover. It has been generally good although a few of the dogs have been hell not being potty trained, chewing stuff up, etc. We have had to live and learn. Now I am looking through videos trying to educate myself. Sorry for the problems you have had.

As a professional pet sitter, please find one in your area. We are insured, bonded if we have employees and many have been in business for some time.

Thank you for this! I have both used Rover for my dog as well as become a boarder with them. I thought all the fees they get were worth it in light of the provided insurance and background checks. It’s funny because the great family that watched my dog had 56 perfect reviews. They said they will only use Rover once to secure a new customer but want future visits to bypass Rover. I questioned that because of the insurance and they said the insurance was useless.
