Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, fungi and viruses etc.) resist previously effective antimicrobials. Antibiotics are the most widely known antimicrobials used to treat bacterial infections. When bacteria develop resistance to antibiotics, antibiotics are no longer effective to wipe out these “Superbugs”. This causes infections becoming more difficult to treat, and makes medical procedures and surgery more risky. To prevent “Superbugs”, we need to use antibiotics properly, maintain personal hygiene and keep vaccination up-to-date.
