This video provides a simple example of a direct proof. Assuming "a", "b" in R, and "a" less than "b" less than 0, we show that a^2 greater than b^2. could you have just multiplied by a negative 1 and then said a>b>0 and fom there you could show that a^2>b^2 from there?
