Lath, you can smoothen out surfaces (wobbly on very sloped terrain) by holding ctrl whilst using the terrain tool.
You can also build up terrain by holding alt.

Only half-way through the video, so not sure if you figured this out, but you can put materials on the ground and they don't despawn, or at least while you play, not 100% sure if save+load despawns them. So you don't really have to store them on the base, just throw them all on the ground, this also allows you to mine something and after that make several trips to haul it all in several trips, also, spoiler or not.... you can build vehicles and storage platforms to put on said vehicle to increase capacity (vehicle-sized equipment require 2 slots, the storage one gives maybe 12? so total +10, not sure if you can stack them though, have only seen them in trailers)

Since the area you are on has many sources for organic resource, it would be advantageous to create generators for your initial power provider. Also from your lander, you can create 4 connectors. Converting all those connectors into platforms blocks you from expanding more.

Once you get the technology for the fuel condenser and orbital trader you can get just about everything you need through trading.

Lath you only have five connection points on the pod so don't use them all up on platforms, also use them to extend your base
