Signed to Sire Records, Ofra recorded „Shaday” with producers Izhar Ashdot and Wally Brill in both Tel Aviv and England, released in 1988. Her emergence onto the global stage coincided with the rise of a new genre, which quickly came to be tagged as "world beat". It became her most successful album to date, selling a million copies worldwide with its masterfully mixed dance-flavoured songs in Hebrew and English.

El Shaddai or just Shaddai is one of the names of the God of Israel. El Shaddai is conventionally translated into English as God Almighty.
