I always measure old to clean metal. Measure and cut my panel then just trace the new on the old and cut the old. Saves the move and mark guessing game

I learned from the beginning. I was 11 at that time. Am 65 now. Am not a car maker. Buttweld is not my favorite. For me is a waste of time. If you can’t treat the back of the panel, and have No plan to do it. The weld area is always is prone, to get rusted. If you can treat inside, overlaps are safe and sometimes stronger.

Can u just put the new on top of the old and cut through both?

Can you alternatively cut through both layers for a good match?

I normally take a piece of carboard, make a line on the excisting pieve and press is hard anough to make a dent in the cardboiard. Cut out the cardboard, put in the new piece and place the cardbox ontop of the new piece by using the line I made. Make sure to not cut in the line but the width of the angle grinder. You don't want to use this guessing method! You a faster one by just using some cardboard.
