The fact that Doakes, despite his extreme dislike of Dexter, was still seemingly concerned that Dexter might be thinking of killing himself is amazing to me.

Dexter really did admire and respect Doakes. He knew that Doakes was a good man and there was no way he could justify hurting him.

As much as I love Dexter, one of the show’s biggest flaws imo is the fact that S2 is basically what the final season should have been.

This show is a great example of the difference between a villan and the antagonist. Doakes, despite being the one in Dexters way, is still a good guy. He listens to dexters confessions, try’s to level with him, and even tells him not to kill himself.

We all waited eight seasons to see how the public reacts to dexter being a serial killer and we never get that.

Doakes was a good man, he didn't deserve to go out like he did.

Doakes was a great developed character. Bringing him back in any capacity (besides a flashback) undermines his character. Doakes wasn't stupid, he knew something was up with Dexter almost from the get-go. (This was elaborated in his S7 flashback) One of them had to die, and since this show is called "Dexter" and not "Doakes", that was an easy choice for the writers.

starting watching dexter was i was 16 in high school. through the few years progressing as an adult i have been depressed at times and times when i did think it was a good idea to kill myself, i always had dexter's word, "no, thats pathetic." echo in my mind. this scene has always stayed with me. dexter is not necessarily a great rolemodel as you see things develop in the 8 seasons, however dexter is a hero to me, because he is a survivalist. he takes responsibility for his actions and for his life.
