All my friends make $30k per year and have brand new cars. They laugh at me for having a crappy car. Little do they know, I make $70k per year and could buy a new car in cash if I wanted to

When the bank owns 90% of "your" assets and you are at risk of losing your entire lifestyle for missing a few payments, you are NOT rich.

I lost my wife 8 years ago to cancer. It was at that moment I realized all the stuff we owned was just stuff and meant nothing. Possessions possess you.

I’m so happy that i’ve never been drawn to ‘stuff’. I’ve been extremely fortunate in my career ($500, 000/yr for the last 23 years) but never let my lifestyle creep up. Zero debt, paid for house, 11year old car, and an overall frugal life. My family and friends have no idea how much wealth I’ve amassed....and I like it that way! Live under the radar and enjoy life with little/no stress!

Here's the key to living the financially independent life: When you have money, buy things that will take care of you when you don't have money.

Been minimalist for 10 years. Paid off all my debts, paid off my student loans, bought a home and building my second one. No car payment since it's paid off. Everything I own I can fit in a small room. I travel every year abroad to Europe and sometimes twice a year. People think I make a lot of money but I don't. I make less than $60, 000 but the experiences I have are worth billions. It's worth billions to others because they can't have the experiences I am experiencing. At a moment's notice I can leave, I can take off and travel, or go to a party, or go to a music show....local or abroad. Life is about experiences...not stuff.

I used to work in the lending/finance industry and pulling someone's credit bureau report was a "code in the Matrix" moment. So many people driving nice cars and claiming to be rich had tons of debt, previous repos, bankruptcies, and owed so much on their houses and cars it was impossible to get out from them. On the flip side, there was the occasional school teacher with a modest income with an immaculate credit history.

If you can’t buy 5 of them, you can’t afford 1 of them.

Stories of fake rich always remind me of a family many years ago growing up. My parents met these people and were invited to their home and were appalled that this big home in an affluent neighborhood was beautiful on the outside, but inside it was practically empty of furniture. Dad said they were proud of some chandelier they kept talking about but Dad would joke saying, "but they're practically sitting on orange crates".

Everyone I know makes this mistake. Too much house, car and stuff. But then they do a staycation because they’re too broke to take simple vacation. And then they’ll look down on me because I have a small house and an older car. I make more money than most of them. Screw what they think. Ironically, two of the millionaires I’ve known drove older cars and lived in houses they could easily afford.

A man earning a $50k salary and saving some of it sensibly, will always be wealthier than a man earning $100k who spends all of it.

Big fan of minimalism, but theres nothing wrong spending a little bit more on things That really matter. Like a great bed to rest properly, or a top notch computer if it makes you happy. Just dont do what the crowd does, which is spending aimlessly

Worked at a bank doing credit checks. I was amazed at the number of bank judgments against those "wealthy show offs". i slept much better at night with my zero debt, rented apartment, average reliable car, and growing savings account. Always lived by the mantra that material things mean nothing. We're all dead in the grand scheme and leave everything behind. Let's enjoy the short time we have doing things we love and stop being bother by impressing others.

I drive a 13 year old Honda that I paid cash for. I invest as much as possible. No debt. I can’t believe how many of my peers have no savings and six figures of debt.

No one ever buys a Mercedes or BMW new, they only get leased and salvage titles here in Los Angeles. Usually, when someone tries to show off their my first reaction is to ask, how much is that lease. Exactly what Aaron said, peacocking. People simply trying to convince themselves they are convincing us they are something they are not.

"Your Child is More Important than a Yacht" is my favorite Clarey video. Nothing wrong with having a few nice things, but money is for freedom and peace of mind far and beyond anything else
