Maria João Pires plays CHOPIN PIANO CONCERTO # 1 in E minor- Emmanuel Krivine conducting the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

Opinions of the concerto differ. Some critics feel that the orchestral support as written is dry and uninteresting, notably the critic James Huneker, who wrote in Chopin: The Man and his Music that it was “not Chopin at his very best.”

On the other hand, Robert Schumann reviewed Chopin’s concerti in 1836 for the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik that “Chopin introduces the spirit of Beethoven into the concert hall”[ with these pieces.

I saw Pires perform the first time Symphony Hall with the BSO in the mid nineties. Ozawa was conducting. They performed Mozarts twenty third (K488) in A major and after two or three bars I knew this was not a usual pianist or performance. Three women sitting next to us began to weep a couple minutes into the piece. By the end of the allegro I noticed a couple in front of us wiping their eyes. The hall was rapt - utterly silent except for sniffles as Pires somehow brought us to a place of utter grace and wholeness. Thinking it was an anomaly I returned the following night alone and was served up another sublime, other-worldly performance by this magician of a pianist, this performer who can wow me with her technical prowess, glorious tone, intonation and phrasing. I have traveled to see her perform and cherish each of those experiences. Thank you for sharing yourself with us Maria.

I don't remember if I had already post this comment but I was in the public during that concert at La Cité de la Musique in Paris (France) on April, 13th 1997. That performance was one of the most intense experiences of my entire life. I was lucky and met her after the concert.

Woorden kunnen niet uitdrukken hoe perfect Maria speelt. Elke componist zou zeer tevreden zijn over haar vertolking van zijn werk. Wat Marie Claire Alain op het orgel is, is Pires op de piano. This is my most favorite performance of Chopin #1 that I listen to everyday. After hearing it thousand times, it still bring tears to my eyes. There is no other pianist who can produce such pearly tones like she does. I love her!!

I thank you sincerely for this concerto. When I close my eyes, I am with my father who is very next to me. Also when Dame Pires is playing the 23rd piano concerto 2nd part of Mozart, my father is always very near. He was a portrait painter and always surching for music to get a client at ease, while painting him/her on canvas, by talking and listening to music. Thanks dad for teaching me life and music like playing as Dame Pirez. See you, I hope... love you dad.

About this concerto, Huneker is dead wrong. It is one of the greatest ever written. This pianist knows it too. She plays as Chopin would have. Great, thanks....
