I would normally use more sophisticated and nuanced terms to describe such a beautiful performance. However, tonight I’m not even going to try. A most challenging day but then concluded by this graceful performance reminds me that there is hope.

Oh, what a lovely face and so full of expression playing this ethereal nocturn. As a boy of 10 I would lie under my mother's grand Steinway touching her feet as she would pedal through this composition...I am now 84., Maria's delightful playing brings back profound memories. Thank you for your hard earned virtuosity.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Polish. Chopin, despite his French surname, was also Polish. Chopin's music is filled with the Polish "spirit". And, unfortunately, not every pianist, even an excellent virtuoso, feels this spirit. Mrs. Pires not only plays perfectly, but she plays with Chopin's spirit, with her heart... I kiss your hands...

The uniqueness is in her ability to convey emotion. All top pianists can learn these notes..but she gives us a melody that is so full of pain, joy, sweetness and intensity with big contrasts that really move me . She is also able to wait... hold the melody, not rushing always to show off speed when unnecessary. A feminine touch? ❤

When I was (re)learning Schubert's A♭ major Impromptu, I listened to Maria's performance, which taught me a great deal. Every time I came back to her performance after a couple more weeks of practice I found new subtlety and depth in her interpretation, it was astonishing. I could never play with her facility and speed, but I used a lot of her ideas...

The one thing I recall most strongly is that her transitions between different sections are never just transitions, they are yet another opportunity for sensitive and artistic expressiveness. Genius.
