Are Pikmin Based On Real Flowers?

Pikmin have an iconic look. Ever since the original trio of Red, Blue, and Yellow Pikmin, we’ve watched the little goobers grow up, sporting a bright flower on their head once they reach maturity. But have you ever wondered what kind of flower they’re wearing?

It’s real, and it has a few different names: Chaenostoma Cordatum, Ornamental Bacopa, or Sutera Cordata. Native to South Africa, it blooms with white, magenta, and lavender petals. Nintendo even created their own breed of the “Pikmin Flower” and dubbed it the Bacopa Cabana.

There have been several Pikmin games in the series, but as of the time of this short, Pikmin 4 is the newest one on the list. You can pick that up on Nintendo Switch.

Ice Pikmin also have yellow flowers, however there is a difference between the flowers, with ice pikmin having this same shape as the others but with the yellow colouring. However the glow Pikmin, whilst also having yellow flowers, actually have petals that taper into a point, which differentiates the type from all other Pikmin types.

I love how the images of the pikmin specifically from pikmin one look like they’ve done some unspeakable horrors.

i hate when videos loop by just saying what was said at the beginning. but this is done in a clever way. i didn’t register how unique the glowmin’s flower was until you looped the video

The glow pikman also seems to have a different species of flower entirely judging by the petal shape

For the Glow Pikmin the flower is similar to Cestrum nocturnum (Huele de noche) a flower that blooms at night

If you were wondering this flower grows very easily here in South Africa and they smell like Honey

I find it interesting that they actually bred it to look closer to the Pikmin flowers

Because of this I actually named my custom character Bacopa in Pikmin 4.

They are more than likely just based of off daisies because they have the sunflower like pad where the pollen is in the center. But they did indeed name a flower after pikmin, it just doesn’t have the same structure

Yes, Pikmin are based, no need for the “on real flowers” part of the question

I think every new Pikmin in Pikmin 4 has it’s unnatural color for a reason. Ice Pikmin are man-made Pikmin, as it was created when a normal onion was left in the fridge for too long, shown in Hero’s Hideaway. I then think the Glow Pikmin was a normal Pikmin, but then the radiation fallout that we learn to have occurred in Pikmin 1 mutated this kind of Pikmin, possibly because it was a lot closer to the fallout.

Although, it could just be that they have adapted to night time. It can also be possible that it’s both. A Pikmin that adapted to night time, but is still mutated. I think this because the flower, unlike the ice Pikmin, is more pointy on the edges. This has something to do with the star petal things that are required to propagate more glow Pikmin.

One of the best loops I have ever seen tbh

Seamless loop. I hate when people comment about perfect loops that aren’t actually perfect. However, this one is actually perfect.
