I think this scene shows a lot about De Niro's character. He cannot let go of his brother in a selfish way. It is somewhat of an uncomfortable scene, emphasized through the audio and visual effect of Joey's paper bag crumpling when Jake hugs him. Notice how Scorsese uses slow motion in the scene where Jake watches Joey enter the store. Throughout the film, slow motion is used to display Jake's heightened sense of awareness and paranoia.

i like how when jake says, "come on, you're my brother. be friends, " joey scoffs and repeats "i'm your brother." like that totally mattered to jake when he was beating the crap out of him in front of his wife and kids.

what if Joey said “Watch the suit! Watch the suit!”

The scene is a great display of how Jake has literally no boundaries. Joey didn't wanna touch or be around him, but Jake just asserted himself on him. He's a guy who only knows how to get what he wants via violence/force.

Awkward scene, Joey is way uncomfortable... barely made eye contact and doesn't even touch Jake. One of the hardest lessons in life is that family members can become completely strangers to each other.

This scene shows how Jake had pretty much burnt his bridge beyond repair.

So wait let me get this straight. Not only did Jake beat the shit out of his own brother in front of his wife and kids. He then proceeded to write a book about it. A tell all. I'm sure that made it better

I think this scene shows how powerful a bond between brothers can be, but doesn't open the door for forgiveness. Rather, it suggests Jake wants forgiveness but is wise enough now to know that might not happen. It's his first attempt, a genuine one, to make peace with himself. It's uncomfortable, no question but a start. Joey probably wouldn't be open to a reunion though.

This is it.
De Niro, Pesci, and Scorsese at the absolute top of their game..
They didn't make a finer film than this.

This scene always makes me cry. I hope nothing ever breaks me and my brother up that we never see each other.

When i first saw it im my late teens, i thought it was anti climactic. Now seeing it in my late 20s, i realized this is prolly how it’ll happen in real life(without the dramatic flourishesnin movies). Makes it more poignant, more sad.

Damn....Great acting...Jake was known for toughness and his stubbornness to not lose. This was as close of asking for forgiveness for him, hugging and kissing his brother in the cheek. Perfectly displayed by Deniro and Pesci.

It's so sad. Even thought Joey is glad to see him he still remains elusive.

makes me love my brother even more we have gotten into some heated arguments and fights but at the end of the day you have to love your brother. LITERALLY the closest person related to you.. <3

This scene makes me miss my brother. If he was alive still I’d hug and kiss him so much.

Joey had the look that so many battered victims have when they see their abuser. I’ve had that look plenty of times. The disgust, the pain, the angst, all of the memories of abuse. It makes you cold, different, you don’t want to be around that person let alone touched. It’s all fake, that’s how it feels, fake, you’re forcing yourself to be nice and not so tense, to not feel disgusting. Being around that person makes you stiff up and you just want to get away cause you know they’ll never get it together. And deep down you realize it’s not that you hate that person but you actually feel sorry for them.
