Listen to the ‘sonic boom’ heard throughout the U.S. capital region on Sunday.

The loud noise was caused by fighter jets scrambling to intercept an unresponsive plane before it crashed in Virginia.
Police say rescuers had reached the site of the plane crash in a rural part of the Shenandoah Valley and that no survivors were found.

I grew up on a Canadian military base in Germany in the 1970's and our school was on the base. Sonic booms from the fighter jets were common while sitting in class.

FAA gave these jets specific permission to proceed supersonic below the prescribed altitude as it was required to attain the overtake necessary to catch up to a jet moving almost 400 kts away from them. Normally, this is prohibited below at low altitude for this reason you see here
