Welcome to Denglisch Docs! All of us have felt happy at one point or another and wanted to share how we feel. Let’s look at a couple of phrases that we use in English to express happiness.

While you can always say, “I feel happy,” there are some other great ways to say that you’re in a cheerful mood. For example, “I’m feeling good today,” or “I’m in such a good mood.” You could also say, “I’m over the moon,” which expresses both happiness and excitement.

When you want to express your happiness in a professional setting, you can use the words “glad,” “delighted,” “ecstatic,” “pleased,” and “thrilled.” For example, if your boss tells you he or she is giving you a promotion, you can say, “I’m so excited about my new position,” or “Thank you for the promotion. I’m so delighted!” If someone else gets a promotion, you can say, “I’m so thrilled to hear about your good news,” “I’m glad that you got the job,” or “I was so pleased when I heard about your advancement.”
You can also express happiness by using the word “elated.” For instance, “After the awards ceremony, I felt elated.” All of these words show that you are “joyful” or “overjoyed” about what has happened. With this in mind, you can also say, “I’m overjoyed at the thought of working with you in the future.”

When you’re happy because you’re satisfied, you can use the word “content.” Let’s say you just completed a project for school, or work, you could say, “I’m 100% content with how the project turned out.” If you get a pay raise at work, you could say, “I’m absolutely content with my new salary.” Or, with regard to a relationship, you could say, “I’m so content with my marriage.”

Sometimes we use the word “upbeat” and “jovial.” For instance, if someone notices you’re smiling or grinning from ear to ear, they might ask, “What are you so upbeat about?” In response, you can tell them why you’re smiling or simply say, “Nothing. I’m just feeling good,” “I’m just in a cheerful mood today,” or “I’m just a happy camper.” The phrase “happy camper” means that you’re a comfortable, contented person, and you can use it even when you’re not camping. Another interesting phrase is “happy-go-lucky,” which we use to describe people who seem to be happy all of the time.

Some ready-made expressions that we commonly use are “I’m on cloud nine,” “He’s on top of the world,” and “She’s jumping for joy.” Let’s say your spouse surprised you with a new car. You might say, “Oh my goodness! I’m on cloud nine.” Likewise, you can also say, “Babe, I’m on top of the world,” or “I want to jump for joy right now!” Expressions that convey the same sentiment are “I’m floating on air,” or “I’m in seventh heaven.” These two phrases mean “I’m euphoric,” which is a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness. For example, you could say, “Dave is in seventh heaven because his wife just had their first child.”

On those special occasions when someone cries out of happiness, we say that they’re “weeping for joy.” For instance, if one of your friends gets engaged, you might say, “When he proposed to her, she said yes and just wept for joy.” Sometimes we add the words “blessed” or “blissful” to express a perfect happiness or great joy. So, you might say, “The engagement was such a blissful occasion.”

Americans in their teens and twenties might also use the word “stoked” to express happiness. For example, a college student might say, “I’m so stoked that our team made it to the championship game,” or ask his or her friend, “How stoked are you that we’re going to Germany for vacation this year!” And in response their friend might say, “Yo, I’m so stoked!”
Using these new phrases actively will definitely enrich your vocabulary. And please feel free to use them frequently because happiness is an emotion that is meant to be shared.

I appreciate you tuning in today. See you next time!
