I don't know to laugh or to cry.
You just solved my problem. My motor after I put it together ran backwards. 🙂.
I have been talking to myself for hours.

Mate, that was exactly what I needed as I have a hvac motor and fan that I need to reverse. I had no idea it was that easy so I will be doing that first thing in the morning. Thanks heaps, Stuart 🇦🇺

You have no idea how happy I am to find this video! Had pulled apart a little desk fan that was stuck. Cleaned it and put it back together, unaware that I had put the shaft in the wrong way, causing the blade to run backwards. Not knowing anything about the different types of motors, I found all kinds of advice on how to reverse the direction of a motor. This solved my exact problem without the need of rewiring anything (which I think would not have worked anyway, from what I read).

Thanks! :D

Hot diggity dam!!!! Thank you so much for this video!! I just had to replace my hvac fan motor. I put it back exactly like it came apart, yet the fan rotation was wrong. Then I found your video. My replacement fan motor looks almost identical to the one you're using in this video. So I did exactly what you said to reverse the motor rotation, then put it all back together again and it's working perfectly!! I couldn't say thanks enough, it just saved me several hundred dollars.

You are actually correct. If you look at a double shafted motor, one end is CW rotation and the other end is CCW rotation. So when you reverse the rotor and shaft, you will have the opposite of the original rotation. However, most PSC and shaded pole motors do not have symmetric spacings internally which means the rotor will be misaligned with the stator. This will result in reduced motor performance and can allow contact of the rotor endrings with the coils which will permanently damage the motor. Thus this would not be recommended as a general practice to reverse a motor.

Thanks again. In 5 minutes I did exactly as you did & tested it & the fan works perfectly -- in the opposite direction . Life saver. Boo-Hoo to all those nay-sayers. Yes, some motors will not allow this reversal but mine did!

Thank You! You just saved me a ton of money. I was about to purchase a reversible motor because my fan was spinning the wrong way. I just fixed my motor and my AC now works properly. Again, Thank you!

Michael Bolton is exactly correct regarding rotor and stator misalignment. Another concern is the possibility of the rotor endring striking the coils. While some motors are designed to be mechanically reversible, with symmetric spacings internally, most are not. This would not be recommended as a general practice to reverse a motor. I designed much of the PSC and shaded pole lines for one of the major manufacturers for 37 years as well as continue to be a member of several UL and CSA motor safety committees and frankly know what I am talking about.

Great video. this worked perfectly for me. mine was a 3 wire application so there was no 4th wire to do simple reverse with the wire method. so this was the only way thank you for making the video. spread the knowledge. thank you sir.

Thank you for sharing. Worked for me on my pool heater. Put it all together and sob if the fan was spinning wrong. Flipped it around like you said and boom blowing air.

My application was with a condenser fan which I re-purposed as a shop fan. I built the box frame and motor mount before I realized it pushed air through the back of my box. (Its a long story as to how the motor is mounted in the outdoor condenser unit to pull hot air out of the unit...) This was a 240 volt single phase, so the comments about reversing the poles did not make any sense. I invested the minute and a half to see how this was done and it sure worked for me. I had the clockwise rotation reversed in 15 minutes blowing air from the back of my box after I remounted the now turning counter-clockwise motor. I agree: if you're going to submit a video about reversing a non-reversing motor, you should use one that doesn't reverse...the extra wire fiasco was distracting. Regardless, thanks for the guidance.

Thank you for your video, and advice it really worked. We had to make some small modifications after switching it, but it worked just fine.

Yeah!!!! Thanks for helping me fix my problem. I bought a new a/c fan motor that was set going the wrong direction.

Thanks for this awesome tip, you saved me time and money. It worked like a charm...

Thanks for this tip! I was just able to reverse a small 115v motor for a dehumidifier fan.

It's so obvious. Thanks, you just saved me a bunch of money.

This helped out a bunch was in a bind and I was way behind. The only issue I had was the wiring fitment but some zip ties helped
