Remastered in 4K
"In 1958, the United States was in the midst of a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union. As part of this competition, the U.S. carried out a series of nuclear tests known as Operation Hardtack I. These tests were conducted in the remote Pacific Marshall Islands, and one of the most notable experiments in this series was the 'Umbrella' test."

Test Name: Operation Hardtack I - Umbrella
Test Date: June 8, 1958
Location: Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands
Yield: 8 kilotons of TNT
Explosion Depth: 150 meters underwater

"The 'Umbrella' test aimed to study the effects of an underwater nuclear explosion on naval ships and the surrounding marine environment. Scientists and military experts wanted to understand how shock waves propagated through water, how radiation dispersed, and the structural impact on vessels nearby."

Appreciate this real time footage from afar.

Was waiting for the blast wave. Did I miss it?

Great vid ATC. Thanks for bringing this to us.

the pre-vapor trails used to measure shockwave phenomena is interesting....

Is there still a lot of nice material lying around or about to be declassified? Or are we nearing the end of the nuclear tests era footage? Logic dictates that there must be a 100x times more footage from each test, even good quality one, If it survived and it gets declasified, we will have quite the visuals in the future

No Martha, the cruise ship pamphlet doesn't mention a radioactive steam cloud. Why do you ask?

It’s amazing how it keeps going up up up but doesn’t really spread out. That must be what happens in deeper water.

I wonder if the audio is the actual audio recording of the detonation. If it is, it represents the most accurate sound of a detonation. It was just a transient popping noise which is typical of any explosion, not the long drawn out noise typically heard on these clips.
On a side note, the surface and undersea detonations created the most radioactive fallout and did the most damage to the ships, especially the undersea one. Explosions transmit energy much more efficiently underwater with a tremendous shockwave.

I'm sure if you dialed in the detonation depth that initial rising column could generate an even bigger wave without breaking the surface turning to white water, spray and vapour

Did this irradiate the water? Can water be irradiated? Is this safer than underground testing?

What are the five pre-blast vapor trails, coming in from the bottom left? They stick around and seem to intensify during the blast.

1:54 Crazy how quickly the island and surrounding waters become so tranquil again; on a strange, unrelated note, though, I get this nagging feeling Gilligan will suddenly appear, wondering what all the commotion was about!

This is raw footage without an original soundtrack.
ATC added in the beach sounds from a third party.
Nuclear bombs don’t couple efficiently underwater for blast effects in relatively shallow ocean water like this lagoon, since a huge portion of the weapon energy instantly converts liquid water to plasma. Thus you see the colossal column of hot water surrounding an internal plasma column, that naturally shot up at great speed to thousands of feet, especially since the plasma bubble reached to nearly below the water’s surface.
In high speed film you can see the effect of the breakaway wave destroying the device buoy platform immediately before the plasma column rocketed up with the debris.

is it ambient layed over sound or real time recorded?
