In this episode I put the Canon 90D too a little more testing and i discuss the results.
Its a great camera but it will need some fine adjusting to get the best out of it.

Here’s something to try.
I’ve been using the Spot AF point instead of the single AF point for birds.
Getting a lot more in focus shots.
Try downloading DPP4 from Canon and check in post processing where your AF point is.
Spot AF most of the time is right on a sharp target.
Also using One Shot with back button focus, instead of AI Servo.
Shutter speeds of 2000-3200 with aperture f10-f11 for BIF,
but for stationary targets getting very good results with lower shutter speeds,
1250 or 800 at f10-f8, using Canon 100-400mm II and Canon 1.4 Extender III.
400mm x 1.6 crop factor x 1.4 extender = 896mm.

If the 90d had all the tweeks you mentioned it would be a 1DX 😁 nice video!

I've been contemplating getting the 90D but had some concerns. Your video was very helpful. It turns out my concerns were accurate and I'll be better off looking into something else for my needs. Thank you!

Hmm...your results are very different than mine...first, I find my 90D is spot on in focusing with my 100mm f/2.8L, my 400 mm f/4 DO II, and my 500 mm f/4L II. No need for any MFA. Also, I don't find any need to shoot at higher shutter speeds due to the additional MP on the 90D. I find the same for my 5DS R, too. The only thing that bothers me about 90D is that it's a 90D and not a 7DM2 or 7DM3 (or a 5D or 1D). Meaning it doesn't have the same build, control scheme, and customizable features of the xD line, and that hurts. I think you should send your 90D back and get another one. All of my Canon bodies AF fine on those lenses I mentioned, so those lenses are fine. If I bring a new camera in and it doesn't, and ends up needing MFA, then that camera is suspect, and should go back. Doing MFA is just you hiding the problems Canon has on QA. Don't do that. The only time you should need MFA is when your lens get old and have been banged around and they are out of adjustment. Then MFA can help, but they still should go back to Canon for proper adjustment so that you don't need MFA. Enjoy your videos, by the way.

Thank you so much for your HONEST opinion.
About AF-C, AF, and ISO!

Now I go use my 90 D Canon for Landscapes, [I love that shutter sound], next week she comes with the tiny 24 mil pancake.

Cheers, Frits from Thailand.

I've been looking for a crop sensor to extend the focal length of my lenses for wildlife photography. I was settled on the 7DII but read the 80D is fantastic. Then the 90D was announced and I wanted to wait to compare. I'm not interested in the video capabilities, but it seems that's the focus of camera companies and most reviewers at this point. I appreciate your review. Subscribed...Keep up the great work.

Ive been going back and forth between getting the 7Dii and the 90d and this one video helped sway me towards the 7Dii so thank you for this.

Thanks for your review. it was very helpful. Did you switch off the iTR ? Because the EOS90d defaults to Face tracking which would cause some of the issues you observed. I too and more interested in birds in flight, motorsport and aviation photography so I face a problem. Do I buy a 7D Mkii or wait for Canon to release a 7D Mkiii or fix the 90D viewfinder tracking

Just to be clear for anyone who might be confused, a higher MP count won't have any negative effect on the image you capture. Upgrading from a 7D2 to a 90D gives you 1.6 times as many pixels, which is comparable to swapping a lens from FF to a (Canon) crop body or switching from a 300mm lens to 500mm. All of them effectively get you closer to your subject. That means that all of them put more pixels on your subject, and the higher resolution obviously shows more detail. That finer detail might mean tack sharp bird feathers or it might mean slightly soft feathers due to focus that's a bit off or a bit of camera shake. A camera with high resolution is capable of capturing a lot of detail, but it requires our technique to be very good. And if the image isn't as sharp as you'd like you can still resize to something smaller.

Fantastic review. Looks like I'm sticking with my 7D2 and hopefully Canon will make a 7D3 soon.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one! I bought the 90D as an upgrade from a 700D. I also have a 6D mark1 so I am used to a certain level of detail even pixel peeping in lightroom. I mostly bought the 90D for the filming options, but I thought it was also aimed at the action photography side so it's annoying because I've never bought anything new especially something at that price. Thank you for explaining the high Megapixel issue with lower shutterspeed. I went to photograph the Seals in Norfolk UK and found that I loved the live view and was getting much better results and since they are very sleepy slow moving subjects it was perfect to really test it out, but I did struggle to do micro adjustments that were truly tack sharp when using normal view finder. I will try use higher shutterspeeds, but maybe not on rainy, cloudy days as my ISO goes through the roof.
