Teaching English in China & Japan: Why I QUIT after 8 Years

If you had told me back in high school that I would end up teaching English in China and Japan, I would say you are crazy. NO WAY! I was a girl in business school with big ambitions, but just when I started my career in corporate American I felt like I was too young to get into the rat race. I quit my job and got on an airplane to the other side of the world. 8 years later and I'm still here, but not teaching much anymore. My adventure teaching ends here and it's time to move on. Here is a comparison between teaching English in China vs. Japan for those interested in teaching ESL or just curious about life on the other side. No regrets, you only live once.

Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

It's never too late to completely change your life. I was sick of my office job and fixing my broken car. I spent many days dreaming about adventure. Adventure is out there for anyone willing to take the first step. -Anming

I feel like one of the reasons you couldn't control the kids was cuz you're so empathetic and easy-going, they seemed to see you more as a loving friend rather than just a teacher :3

Those kids adore you. They'll always remember you.

So many of our students want to learn classroom-related Chinese to be able to better control and manage their classrooms. I think you did better than you give yourself credit and they will always cherish their time learning from you.

It's unfortunate that a lot of YouTubers like to create their own narratives. Thank you for sharing your experiences (genuinely). Learning from each other's experiences is important to the development of society and totally underrated these days.

It's far better to try something and realise it doesn't work out than to not try and have regrets later on.
Keep doing what you're doing, Miss. Authentic!

Your vids are so much more tolerable than most of the "foreigners abroad in asia" genre. Most are weirdly arrogant, or social outcasts in their home country and running from something etc

You're pretty normal and your perspective is refreshing compared to the usual (usually a male) obdervstions of life abroad in asia which often degenerate into some axe grinding about the new culture

Idk but watching you with those kids around I felt like you are a natural at this and teaching is your true calling. Maybe you're conflicted by people telling you to "get a real job" but honestly teachers, doctors and law enforcement workers are the most vital of all professions and the pandemic only drove that further home.

My wife went to Western Michigan University to be an English teacher, she taught at Battle Creek, Michigan High school, a real challenge in an inner-city school. Even with impeccable classroom management skills, she quit, returned to school to study ASL/interpreting which is what she does now in colleges, hospitals, etc...She had to cut her own path which is what seems to be what you are doing.
I enjoy you channel...great job!

The different between your videos and so many others is that you're so down-to-earth; and as a Michigan native myself, you remind me of half the women and girls I've ever known.

Your Chinese is good !! The students love you. Good or bad, you've seen more of the reality than people who just stay at one place.

Finally, mastering a language is to communicate with people. Jumping around the world, and have fun is a dream of any people. I understand your desire. ^^

Glad you decided to post on YouTube though! Loving your channel! I totally agree: If you currently feel stuck doing something you don't like in your life: You always have options for a happy future if you make the change! You don't even have to move half-way around the world for a positive life change experience, sometimes it's just about changing jobs or making new friends!

12:35 "If we didn't speak Chinese they would take us to the doctor." haha! You must be ill if you can't speak Chinese.

You're so mature for your age. Being in many different countries would've made you learn a lot more about the world. Your parents must be proud of you. I hope they are. I feel inspired. I'd love to go to Japan (and America) someday. Beautiful countries.

I wouldn't consider my self a professional in teaching but one of the reasons to loose control is the number.... But i think to teach kids English as a foreign language while you have advanced Chinese skills is very useful at least you can communicate and understand their needs properly, and remember there is no experience meaningless in your life so enjoy every moment, build your personality and don't look only to the negative side of it 😊😊😊
