Interesting fact about this. I once talked to the author who wrote this story and he said “When it came time to writing it, Lucasfilm wanted me to kill Chewbacca”. When he heard the new he said “You do realize the fans will have my head when they hear this, right?”

So far it seems Chewbacca hasn't seem to be too hurt by Han's death compared to how hurt Han was when Chewbacca died in legends.

On the subject of the Yuuzhan Vong war, I have to say that I preferred that story ark over the Force Awakens. It suddenly made Palpatines madness and military build up make more sense. He could see the future, and knowing an enemy was coming he began forming a massive army, fleet, and constructed super weapons. For the war to come. But because he lost, the New Republic most likely did not have nearly as large of a standing army than the Empire. As a result over 365 Trillion people were killed during the war.

About 10 years ago when I was working an afternoon shift at the hospital. One of the guys that I was working with was a massive Star Wars fan and had read the comic series and the legend series. We were talking about our love for Star Wars even though I had not read the same material that he had read. He informed me of Chewbacca‘s death and how he died. I was so overcome with grief that it affected the rest of my night at work and also my week. I reflected on his character and how much he meant to me growing up. I could not believe that I felt such deep sorrow for somebody who is essentially a fictional character. Watching this again remind me how much I grieved for Chewbacca. I have no regrets- these characters, the stories are my version of ancient tales and mythologies which taught me many lessons and gave me many subjects to ponder on and fantasise about in my formative years.

Thanks Chewbacca. For being one of the greatest heroes in my life growing up. We all have to die. I will face the same moment. maybe not is such heroic fashion. But all pass into the shadows we must and to be grieved by those left behind.
