This week Reactions takes a look at the science behind why carbon monoxide is so deadly. It’s colorless, odorless and can be deadly. Carbon monoxide is no joke, especially in the winter when people will do just about anything to warm up. Raychelle Burks, Ph.D., explains why carbon monoxide is so dangerous, and how you can stay safe, in the latest episode of the Reactions series Get To Know A Molecule.

Too many people died in my country today after consuming CO while sleeping in their cars with engine running in a heavy snow storm. Actually, I believe that the tail pipe of the cars as filled with snow the exhaust didn't exhaled the CO rather threw it back in the car and they died by consuming this poisonous CO. Rest in peace those who lost their lives today.

People were fumed when dynamite was used to blast rock beside a house, to build another house. Came in through the ground!

Story time ~

One day I was at my grandmas house and she has gas stoves. It was early in the morning and she told me to stir the porridge she was making so I said yes then I remember having dizziness nausea and almost fainted and fell back on the wall, actually my grandma was there and she told me to take some rest I thought it was bc I was dehydrated but now this all makes sense

Another reason why carbon monoxide is so deadly is because it is odorless, colorless, and tasteless meaning that you can’t see, smell or taste it thus making it very hard to detect. What this means is that you will often have no warning of it meaning that before you know it you could die. While Carbon monoxide is always deadly at all times it is especially dangerous at night during bedtime hours when people are asleep as inhaling the fumes will cause you to go into a deeper sleep in which you will eventually never wake up as a result of you dying from the carbon monoxide. In fact most people who die or have died of carbon monoxide poisoning died in their sleep. That is why it is important to have carbon monoxide detectors in your home especially both inside and outside the bedrooms as if you are asleep then the detectors will wake you and other people up thus giving you time to escape.

Hemoglobin in blood (protein binds to iron atoms) (Oxygen binds to iron atoms VERY loosely). CO, in contrast, binds very STRONGLY to Iron in Hemoglobin taking up all the free binding sites.

Carbon monoxide in tunnels? That problem was tacked in NYC during the 1920s by designer Clifford Holland (for who the Holland Tunnel is named) by designing a ventilation system that brought fresh air into the tunnel under the floor and sucked out the polluted air through the ceiling by fans and towers on each side of the length of the tunnels. Carbon monoxide can be removed by circulating air.

I am super new to this, can someone please explain to me why our body really needs oxygen why not nitrogen? because there's more nitrogen in air than oxygen. and we breath in O2 and and breath out CO2, where does carbon from?

Does CO permanantly disable hemoglobin, and so your body must make more for you to recover, or does it eventually release from the hemoglobin? Or, is recovery both of these combined?

I felt overly drunk I felt like a shot Bambi trying to figure out how to not fall and get to help. If u know about carbon monoxide from a car you should know I would of been died in my car if I haddnt opened the door and quickly got out. Listen to body signs... but more importantly just keep all your windows rolled down wether it’s cold or my body signs that were happening could of been from it or because I smoked a black so just pay close attention to the headache, ears ringing like high pitch but maybe low pitch white noise.... hearing your heartbeat in your head thumping. Also just checking your heart with your hand when it feels like something seems wrong it probably is because my heart was beating fast as ever when I when it seems hard to breathe even when your car is not on. Don’t sit in the car. Don’t start it up even if the car is warmed up between the C and H level. Even if your warm the car up when it’s warmed up it’s still gonna be there it doesn’t help and I didn’t know. It accumulates really fast. When I got out of the car I could barely walk I felt like My legs kept wanting to give up on me I’m glad I grabbed my stuff out the car And I was lucky to collapse once I got to the steps by the door I was even more lucky to function my hands to press one letter in the contact that was in the house to make a call to unlock the door for me. Also yes nausea and Confusion.... When I almost was collapsing slipping before I got through the door and when I was getting out the car as well confusion was all in my head too.
