for the most part, as a patient with chronic pain, i find that ice actually makes things worse, whereas, moist heat helps. when i had abscessed teeth, ice worked best but for muscle and sciatic pain, heat works best. but chiropractors and doctors tend to argue with me about it. thank you for making my point.

I have had swelling on both my ankles sins Amy sprains last November (13 months). I improved my biomechanics and end-range ROM and strength, and so most swelling magically diminished but there's still some residue (doesn't feel warm anymore too).

Any idea on what that is about other that Wolf's law?

Hi! I had to get a cortisone shot in my knee for bursitis this past Monday; my question is my dr told me to come home and put ice on my knee-- what would you suggest?

Is there a guideline based on research, on how much time should we use heat/ice? A person who i consider a good PT, uses heat just before the therapy and ice just at the end of it, for 10 minutes each or so. I am talking about shoulder therapies after surgery or conservative treatment of cuff tears. Do you think is that a good use of it? I am trying to figure it out with rational criticism

Hi Paul great information as always. I have a quick personal question if you would be kind enough to answer I would be very grateful. I've had chronic swelling at the olecranon following a rather aggressive session of shockwave therapy for triceps tendinopathy approximately 1 year ago. On recent examination by a sports medicine doctor he concluded that the shockwave therapy had induced acute olecranon bursitis. How might I reduce this chronic swelling? There was no evidence of frank olecranon bursitis on MRI. Many thanks - Sam.
