But when they do get upset, what's the reason why? Is it because they're racist as the media would have you believe, or is there something else going on?

A perfect and well-spoken explanation of this practice.
It's not about racism at all.
It's about retaining character integrity and maintaining the years/decades long relationship fans have formed with them.

Just as if Black Panther, Mr Miyagi, Fresh Prince, Spock, or Foxy Brown were recast as a white ginger woman, they are NO LONGER the same character, but new ones.

So, create great new characters, but don't destroy existing ones.

Then there would be no issues nor backlash.

And it would demonstrate a lot more creativity, variety, and respect for the fans' wishes, which should always be the paramount focus.

Sir, that blew my mind and is spot ON. It breaks immersion, just takes you out of the universe. The character is no longer real, they're not immutable. They can be changed depending on the whims and fancies of whoever is writing the story, backstory and background lore be damned. How is this a good thing just for the sake of "representation"?

Note to the ones doing this- MAKE YOUR OWN DAMNED CHARACTERS AND STORIES. PLEASE. For the love of Humanity, creativity, the arts.

For me it’s less of the race but it’s the bringing race into the plot of the story where it isn’t needed or wasn’t intended originally….that’s what diminishes the character

Its not that at all. It's the laziness. Characters who were originally debut a certain way should stay that way. Just how there's an amazing white version of spiderman, and a black version of spiderman, and woman version of spiderman and so on. It would be really lazy if they just completely race/gender swapped Miles Morales/Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy. They all work because theyre their own unique characters in a multiverse of spiderpeople and it works.

Only speaking on Dragon Ball Z. I always imagine Goku and Vegeta (Bulma) being white based on the cartoon series. I never saw them as Asian. The casting for Dragon Ball Evolution was bad but the script was also horrible as well. Justin Chatwin had not pack on any muscle at all and had very limited martial arts training. Long story short, DBE had other massive problem other than casting.

This is a great point, though sometimes it’s worth it when you find the perfect actor to portray someone. While it’s bad just for the hell of it, most people forget that nick fury was white in the comics because of how good Samuel L Jackson was.
