lmao the gig economy was never about giving workers more freedom, it was about giving them fewer benefits and protections. the fix for this isn't to go back to 9-5s for those same corporate assholes, the solution is to fight to get the power back for the workers. the only reason byou like your 9-5 is because you're working for yourself.

The situation with food delivery is something else

Customers get ripped off by the cost
The delivery drivers don't earn enough
Restaurants get ripped off
Somehow the companies aren't profitable

Everybody loses

Not so fast. 9-5 jobs are the reason why even those of us who grew up in the 90s suburbs never saw our dad, except for weekends.
The job + commute took all day.
I realize you want to be an office boss, but we're presented with a false choice here...
The reason workers moved away from 9-5 jobs is not because of rock bands and culture wars. Art imitates life, not the other way around...
90s office jobs stopped paying workers enough, and bad city planning forced people to commute--requiring the uncompensated purchase and maintenance of autos, insurance, and fuel.
Bosses big and small hoarded all the wealth, cashing in on anti-union media sentiment, until even the lowest ranked government jobs looked sweet by comparison.
The gig economy was always a lie. I couldn't be the only one who read the entire TOS for Uber, Lyft, Instacart, etc? And took screenshots?
Because (allegedly/not allegedly) the TOS changed after signing up....and that's illegal.
By the time of their roll out, gig platforms (allegedly) already'd mined enough data on users to know most are debt bound or impoverished, and nobody reads the TOS, and tech companies at launch wear a publicity halo... So they (allegedly) assumed nobody would rise up to fight them. At least not before the top execs extracted a King's ransom off the backs of these "free market" servants.
Also implicated; the U.S. stopped manufacturing nearly entirely in the past half century, but that is changing.
My point isn't capitalism bad, that's too vague. I've come around to the realization that it doesn't matter whether capitalism or communism is enacted. The U.S. has marvelous anti-trust laws. Checks and balances (regulations) must be updated, upheld, enforced whether they're popular or not & especially when they're not, or things will fall apart in less than a lifetime.
And it don't take long to learn what we were fools to take for granted once it's gone....restoration costs way more than regulation.

Last time I checked my memory banks the gig economy came about because there were no 9-5 jobs available for most people post 2008, not us taking Grunge music too seriously, but idk maybe I hallucinated that or something.

The big problem with 9-5 is if you're a salaried employee, expect to work way more than those hours in unpaid overtime (because it's salaried lol). Also these days you can't get away from the email or slack after hours and on weekends etc unless you're very committed to not installing those apps on your phone. Greenday's 9-5 would be a miracle today

You work for yourself/brand in the your own office which is different then working for someone else in some random office 💀 not the same bro, but congratulations though. To have your own office is immaculate.

There’s no such thing as a 9-5 anymore. That’s an outdated term that originated in a time when unions and the working class had power. I find it very odd that it’s still used to this day even though a 9-5 job is nonexistent in today’s corporate world. Go get yourself a nice underpaying “ 9-5” these days and try to form a union to get the full value of your labor and see what happens.

The 90s were a time of massive anti-corporatism, where now amongst young people the careerist philosophy is extremely dominant. Most young people now are aware that without a progressing career they won’t be able to keep up with rising costs of living for long, and so will choose a tolerable career with a distinct wage progression to it over alternatives.

I can speak from experience, when looking for a job, I wanted a 9-5. I wanted to know when I got to work and when I left. I currently work 10-6 and do enjoy it. That being said, something needs to change. the 9-5, eight hour work day doesn't make sense any more. Our technology is better, we don't need to work longer hours. Heck, we barely even make use of the the full 8 hours most of the time because there's simple isn't that much to do. Thumb twiddling is a big part of 9-5's in a lot of cases.
