Upgrading to XLE for 3500$ gets you: wireless phone charging, automatic lights, heated steering, heated/power seats, synthetic leather seats, and of course the much better looking 19 inch rims/tires.

The Base (LE) is ~12% cheaper (3500$), is ~9% better on gas (5 MPG), and has less electronic features which could break over time, and I also believe the cloth seats would be more durable over time than the PU leather?

In summary....

The base is the more practical choice in every area. cheaper purchase price. better mpg. tires are about 40% cheaper to replace. it's cheaper to insure (small amount). it will probably age better over time (cloth seats and less electronics to break).

Let's not kid ourselves though, a lot of us are looking at the 23 Prius because, to an extent, we want something cool/stylish. After all, you could say that if all you really cared about is cost/reliability, a 2-year-old Corolla is probably the better choice for most people. even factoring in that the Corollas MPG is less. the lower purchase price, insurance, and tires on the Corolla will save you more money in the long run. So it makes sense that if you're already spending the extra to get get the Prius, it's tempting to throw in a couple extra thousand (12% purchase price) to get the version with the luxury look/features.

Hope this helps someone.

After a lot of thinking, I believe I personally will wait a few years for used car prices to drop and just go all-in on the economy side and pick up a 2-years-old base Corolla ideally non-financed. I don't like the spiral-of-consumption mindset this 23 Prius started to set me on. it's just one concession after another where first you justify spending an extra 28% on the purchase price (Corolla LE vs Prius LE), now you've got to finance and pay interest, now you want to spend an extra 12% on the purchase price to make your nice car look really nice, now you have to spend more on tires, now you want to go get car washes constantly to keep it shining, now you're nervous every time you have to park close to someone, now every scratch bothers you, and every ding sends you straight to the body shop... all of these costs add up and cause you to make different choices in other areas of your life because you're under pressure to maintain your income in the short-term rather than... you know what, let me stop lol, this just a damn YouTube comment lol.

For many who want all wheel drive, know that the AWD LE Prius has 87 less miles or range per tank of fuel. Some due to lower MPG and some due to it having a 0.8 gallon smaller gas tank.

Finally someone going over in detail the base model!! Thank you sir. Great video and review. I currently have a 2013 Prius 2 with 250k miles on it. I’d like to upgrade to this exact trim/color. 🙌

This Prius hybrid set up needs to become a standard across Toyota's entire range. It's the perfect combination of fuel efficiency and power.

What I like most about this base model is the smaller wheels with bigger sidewall for a more comfortable ride on subpar roads filled with potholes. Only thing I don't like is the low profile which could get dings.

Yeah, this base model review was a great idea...really do need more reviews of the LE . Thanks so much for the quick details and clarity! I think I will be retiring my 2010 Carola with 230, 000 for a new Prius. I really wonder of all this electronic stuff will still be rocking and rollin 10 years? Toyota can make reliable cars...hope this turns out to be one.

What this really makes me excited for is the upcoming redesigned Camry. I might just upgrade from my 10th gen Accord sport hybrid.
