Antique Rusty Knife Restoration

Restoring a rusty knife I found with a metal detector. The process involved a lot of hand crafting by a skilled artisan cleaning the blade, welding it and shaping the knife. In the end the artisan turned a piece of rusty metal into an incredible knife a viking would be proud of!

This is not a restoration, this is a new knife with a few grams of old pitted metal attached

Seems like this is less of a restoration, and more of a replica made from about 40% recycled material.

Unless it has sentimental, historical, or some such value, there’s no point in restoring it, because there’s very little metal left.

Just curious as to why a san mai style wasn't used. Would have preserved the original metal throughout the forging, and used it for the cutting edge. But these are differences of style, and I respect the talent shown here.

Can we get an update on the cat that was restored. Did it make it?

How much of the original knife was left after grinding?

To be fair it was entertaining, if it was made of three or more of these original bloomary blades to make a whole that may have been a little more satisfying, nice final product, I wouldn't let trolls detract from a good bit of content 😊

Im not denying the skill involved but question the morals. Rather like the famous axe that had three new handles and two heads but was still the original(?).

You didn’t restore anything. You just made a new knife…

It was a learning experience, it has some of the old metal which makes it special nonetheless.

The crazy part is is the knifes not even really in this final piece and I bet you they charge them an exuberant amount of money

Thats not even a knife anymore. Its a rusted lump.

Not a restoration at all. Would have been better off cutting up what was left of the blade and adding other metal in either a canister Damascus or crucible steel billet.
