During the Great Depression, my grandfather used to cut my dads hair (and my uncles) with sheep sheers. My dad said it felt like they would pull one hair out for every 3 they cut. It was not one of his fondest memories.

My Mum grew up on a sheep farm. She had a pair of these that she used to edge the lawn with. By hand. When she was about 50 and got bad arthritis Dad grudgingly took over. When Dad was 60ish he finally told her where to shove the shears and got an edger. They still have the shears hanging in the shed.
