At least it is if you have one of the new ones that lets you use your phone hands free.

There is a very simple solution to that problem. Do not sync your phone to the infotainment system in your car. Get a Bluetooth headset.

If you are a physician and using the system to call patients about their health, isn’t that in violation of HIPAA law?

Ford has actually said it out loud, that the data is more valuable to them than the car is. In Wisconsin we worked on this for a while trying to get a law passed that makes the data in the car our property. GM came in to the hearings and caused as much confusion as they could and that was pretty much the end.
Recently we have had state reps say we should try again realizing how bad the companies lied to them.

I know you believe in the courts, Steve, but we are way beyond that at this point.

When I was in automotive school, the instructors were talking about how the government was trying to get car companies to move to OBDIII. The system would give the car the ability to self test AND REPORT the emissions results to the respective agency. Then the car would give you so many start cycles to get it repaired before it locks out the starter solenoid circuit so you can't use it until it's repaired. This was in 2018 so this doesn't surprise me at all.

Between this and the potential government mandated kill switch, I can see a real demand for older models.

We are slowly transforming into a country our forefathers would have rebelled against.

The implications are HUGE! And constitutional considerations are a major issue here. For LEO agencies to have access to these things without a court order and warrants is scary!

Great vid. Years back I was assisting a union to salt a company I was working for. We were in the process of voting to go union. Two local union bosses told me that this capability existed and that we should leave our work phones in our vehicles and walk about 50’ away before discussing organization efforts. They said not all companies used that tech but it was definitely out there.

If the car manufacturers are selling your data to advertisers, they are also giving that data away to the police for free.

The scariest part about this is, they can can collect all this information and then use it against you. Basically violating your constitutional right, treating everybody like a criminal and saying oh no, it’s just for gathering data… It’s disgusting

We can’t expect courts to do what legislators are supposed to be doing. This is precisely the kind of thing we need to write to our representatives about. That being said, invasion of privacy should be considered in-itself injurious, you shouldn’t have to prove some secondary harm

I was a product manager at general motors in detroit at the renaissance center until twenty nineteen. While I cannot confirm nefarious acts, I did get to watch corporate decision making. Every avenue where privacy had a foothold was trounced when it was legal. It's a dirty game we're playing. Good thing some of us snuck in our own weapons.

The people you're looking to protect you from companies like these are the people allowing it to happen.

It should be noted that when you first connect to a car's bluetooth your phone will ask you to grant permission for access to contacts and SMS. I know it's specifically meant for enabling the ability to hands-free-ask the car to "call mom" or "send dave johnson a text saying I want my dang money" ..I still always deny the permissions because I don't use the voice features.

i'm genuinely surprised this kind of intrusion to privacy doesnt fall under wiretapping/eavesdropping laws
and wouldnt it fall under espionage acts if they collect any classified info/data from government workers/contractors?

Wait, let's bring it to the most extreme logical conclusion. If they are openly saving they are saving them couldn't you find a politician, lawyer or judge with a car or their spouse or children's cars and get a court order or request and get all the messages? Are law enforcement using them to bypass phone carriers? Seems like something is there just someone would need to dig.

To take this a step further. I was at a store and stopped in an aisle to look at something. I didn't physically touch the item or pick it up, I just looked at it while it was on the shelf. It was not an item I had looked at on the internet or discussed with anyone. It was just something that caught my attention as I was walking down the aisle. For the next few days all ads seen were related to the item, or items like it.

*Steve, This is a case for the Institute For Justice. See if they'll take it up.*
*The state can argue all they want, it is a clear violation of the Privacy Act. This has nothing to do with injury stuff? Who brought that up??.*
