So, Toyota built a sports car, but penalized drivers for using it the way it was meant to be driven?

I used to love the idea of "smart cars" when I was younger. Now I want NOTHING to do with them.

Where are the lawsuits? There needs to be more legal action against this.

I was offered, as an option to lower our premium for car insurance in Canada, to download an app that tracked my driving. If I sped, braked hard or accelerated hard this would go against my premium. This is some black mirror stuff!

Doesn't surprise me at all 💀
It was only a matter of time.
Soon they'll start writing speeding tickets retroactively based on your last trip.

Thats why i prefer a dumb car. I dont need a subpar ipad as the control panel of my vehicle.

I decided not to update my 2014 car, it has Bluetooth and even that is troubling. I won’t be getting a new car unless they enact laws to protect consumers against this type of overreach

Thank you for choosing this topic. I was telling friends about this a year ago and they all said things like "That's crazy!" or "That's some kind of conspiracy theory". It's a potentially gigantic new revenue stream for automakers. I hope this gets massive attention.

My problem with this system is that it will always be against you in an abstract way.
They'll never reduce your price if you drive like a limousine driver.
But they will increase it because you hit the break pedal for a sudden red light\pedestrian

You need to make a video on how to disable or block this data from being collected or transmitted.

I recently learned my car insurance had spiked. It had almost DOUBLED. When I contacted my insurance agent, she explained it was because of a speeding ticket I got. Once. One speeding ticket in my entire life. No car crashes. No faulted claims. Just one speeding ticket was enough to nearly double my insurance payments. I tried to switch providers but my agent came back saying all other insurance companies gave even higher quotes... Insurance is to blame here. My privacy is mine, yes. Without a doubt. But I wonder how problematic car manufacturers would behave if they didn't get any lucrative kickbacks from insurance companies in the first place. They're devils on earth.

Who knew 1984 was going to be 40 years late and it's actually going to be in 2024
This type of invasion of privacy is appalling

Me: If insurance companies raise rates if you are driving too fast, do they lower your rates if you change your driving habits and slow down?

Insurance companies: [cricket sounds]

Modern cars to drivers: I'm sorry I can't do that Dave.
Modern cars to the industry: I can tell you all about my driver!

Cool, so this selling of data taken without consent for profit means we'll get a significant discount on the cars to compensate, right? ...right?!

Coming soon: Your insurance company will be able to disable your car in your driveway if they find out you voted for the wrong politician, or said something online that they don't like.

this kind of spying doesnt even keep people safe, if a driver realizes that their driving is being monitored they will be forced to do things like very slowly break or slowly accelerate despite the situation not calling for it to stop their car claiming that they are bad drivers

Having your car spying on you while you're having sex is crazy! How aren't more people outraged by this?

I first heard about this a few years back from Soshana Zuboff the author of The Age Of Surveillance Capitalism. Since then I’ve always felt queesy about the prospect of buying a modern car. It’s enough to make me think I’ll never buy one and instead opt for a life of public transport, cycling and taxis.
