You call smashing the ice a hassle.

I call it fun.

Instructions unclear. Replaced all my sewage pipes with chains. Send help

Huh this is funny i live in Brazil and it doesnt snow where i live but those chain pipes are very common. We use them to avoid leaves from clogging the pipes instead of ice. Never knew they were used in many other countries for a different reason. Really cool thing to learn

My brother actually put chains as down spouts because it was cheaper. It works well, but one did get struck by lightning once. Loudest boom ever.

The water still freezes, just slowly. And once its frozen you cant just hit the bottom but youll have to mainly break each segment of ice.

I just put a torch under it and let all the ice fall and break, it also allows me to use it for later.

you're acting like this is a 'hassle' this looks insanely satisfying

it has nothing to do with freezing. These chains freeze too, maybe even better.
They are for slowing the water down so that it minimizes erosion of the ground below when they are not directly attached to a proper drain.

Hey, ice doesn't build up that much in the storm pipes normally in colder regions. Also I've seen less than 10 of those chain things during my life, so take this with a grain of salt. Good video non the less 👍🏼

This isn't a "colder regions" thing, it's any region where the temperature goes below zero thing. The actual reason this happens isn't the cold, it's the warmth from bad roof insulation, making the snow melt and collect in the rain pipes. It's the same principle why icicles form on some roofs or even specific sections of one rooof but not others

I wish we actually had this problem in cold regions. This looks like so much fun 😊

The chains also splash the water all around themselves, preventing the main function of the drain pipe, that is to funnel all the water into the drain without the wall getting wet.

The nice thing about chains is that it distributes the water all over the exterior of your home, allowing the water to rot the side of your home and if you have a basement, congratulations!

We actually have those chains outside our house. They're colorful and pretty. Ice forms between and around the chains but causes no problem and melts when the weather is warmer.

These chains are designed to prevent leaves from clogging the pipes, not to avoid ice formation. Ice will also form on the chains; the shape is irrelevant.

Fun fact this Tuesday up in northern Illinois. It’s supposed to get down to -6 and have a high of three. °F

You could also add a 90° or 45° bend at the bottom of the pipe to make the water be able to go away before it freezes
