Video footage of the Russian Ministry of Defense shows the Russian versions of the close-in weapon system (CIWS) in action.

Scenes feature the 30mm AK-630 and 30mm AK-306 CIWS in action during live fire at sea.

The AK-630 is a Soviet and Russian fully automatic naval close-in weapon system based on a six-barreled 30 mm rotary cannon. In "630", "6" means 6 barrels and "30" means 30 mm. It is mounted in an enclosed automatic turret and directed by MR-123 radar and television detection and tracking. The system's primary purpose is defense against anti-ship missiles and other precision guided weapons. However it can also be employed against fixed or rotary wing aircraft, ships and other small craft, coastal targets, and floating mines. Once operational, this weapon system was rapidly adopted, with up to 8 units installed in every new Soviet warship (from mine-hunters to aircraft carriers), and hundreds produced in total.

A derivative of AK-630M was developed for light craft and this system was named as AK-306. Externally, the air-cooled AK-306 can be distinguished from the AK-630 by the absence of the water cooling system (a cylindrical jacket that surrounds the barrel cluster of the AK-630). Internally, the AK-306 (A-219) used electricity to power the automatics, instead of using the exhaust. This version also lacked radar control, being only optically guided, hence making it less of an anti-missile weapon and more of a surface-to-surface weapon, and the designation of the overall system is consequently changed from A-213-Vympel-A to A-219. The design started in 1974 and the system was accepted into service in 1980. When production was completed in 1986, 125 systems were in service.

I love how they're called AKs, makes me think that they are just AK platform weapon systems.

This system can engage air targets at ranges up to 4, 000 m (4, 400 yards) and surface targets at ranges up to 5, 000 m (5, 500 yards). The TV control system can detect MTB sized ships at the distance of 75 km (40 nm) and the fighter-size air targets at 7, 000 m (7, 600 yards).
Rate Of Fire AK-630: 4, 000 – 5, 000 rounds per minute
AK-630M: 4, 000 – 5, 000 rounds per minute
AK-630M1-2: 10, 000 rounds per minute
AK-306: 600 – 1, 000 rounds per minute

Quite a few years ago on YouTube, I remember watching a short doco on these systems....it had an old soviet sailor describing them being the expression on his face and the way he spoke while describing the system was didn't need subtitles to know what he was saying...probably something along the lines of "designed by a madman....the whole ship vibrated and your eyes didn't stop rattling around your skull till hours afterwards"...or something along those line....I cant find the clip any more. I'd live to see it again.

I find it funny how the idea of a CIWS is just "throw enough shit at a wall and eventually something will stick" 😂

Imagine being shot at by GAU-8s, GSH-6-30s, and AK-630s at once.

For your info: the slower firing one is the AK-306, not quite a CIWS system since it fires on a real slow rate. So i deduce its mainly for light-craft repellant (think Somali pirates)

The AK-630 (and its "Duet" variant, AK-630-2) does fires *up to* 10.000 rounds per minute. But maybe in this vid they operate on a more managable 5.000 rounds per minute

I do not want to denigrate this weapon without having used it myself, but: it doesn't look 'right' to me.
Lemme 'splain:
The Phalanx very rapidly targets incoming rockets and quickly vomits forth a 'cloud' of 20mm shells to intercept it.
Per this video (assuming the system is being shown at full operation), the turret spins slowly and acquires slowly, the cannon shoots relatively slowly, and the shells come out in such a diffuse pattern that it seems little better than flak.
Maybe it works magnificently. But the video suggests otherwise.
Am I being too harsh? Have I missed some crucial elements?

Judging by the tracer spread, seems pretty inaccurate. Spray and pray you hit the right target
