Is Douglas Emhoff a proud Jew? Emhoff, the husband of U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, made a speech in Arizona expressing his love for being Jewish and encouraging others to live openly and without fear. Berel appreciates Emhoff's pride but delves deeper into what it truly means to be Jewish, emphasizing that Judaism goes beyond cultural symbols like bagels or fighting anti-Semitism. He discusses the importance of following God’s commandments (mitzvot) and how these practices form the core of Jewish identity.

Berel also raises concerns about the challenges facing Jewish continuity, such as interfaith marriages, noting that Emhoff’s children with Harris are not considered Jewish according to traditional Jewish law. He shares his own experience of almost marrying outside the faith and the impact it would have had on his Jewish lineage. The speaker encourages Jews to reconnect with their religious roots, suggesting that the essence of Judaism lies in fulfilling God’s commandments, even when they seem illogical. He urges Jews to look beyond modern cultural trends and embrace the spiritual depth of their heritage.

If he’s so proud, why allow his daughter to fund hms through UNWRA?

On the one hand, his feelings about his heritage are not my business. Maybe he really does love being Jewish, whatever that means to him. But to answer your question, do I think he is a proud Jew, HELL NO! The only thing 'Jewish' about Emhoff is (I assume) his genes. He does nothing to indicate that he really cares about or understands anything about Judaism. Frankly, when he trots out his supposed 'heritage' I find it insulting and pandering.

Perfectly said. Recently I have realise that some jews, decide when to be a Jew and when not to be one. It all depends on the circumstances of their benefits . It’s very sad and unfortunate.

The land of Israel was a gift from God to the children of Israel. No one has the right to take His gift from the Jews.

Amen. To be Jewish is to obey HaShem's commandments and keeping Shabbat is is a sign between HaShem and us.
Well explained.

My great grandfather was Jewish. I don't know if his wife was. Their son married a Catholic. My mother (who didn't know he was) told me how drawn she was to sit outside the synagogue and listen to the cantors sing. When I had my son I would use Yiddish words saying things like "you're such a mensch!" She asked me how I knew that word. I didn't know how. It's in our DNA.
