New Study Shows Exactly Which Muscles are Used For Pull-Ups

Being good at pullups is not just about having strong lats. That's why certain segments of a pullup can feel harder than others. Some people struggle with the beginning, middle, or end range more than the others. Based on a recent EMG study (link below), various muscles are activated at different times throughout the full range of a pullup. If some of those muscles are weak, you may have trouble with that specific part of the pullup.
