The whirling dervishes: A gentle face of Islam | Focus on Europe

Every visitor to Turkey knows them: the whirling dervishes. Their dance symbolizes a peaceful dimension of Islam, Sufism. Faced with the threat of Islamist fundamentalism, it's currently enjoying a renaissance.

I was skeptical about Islam from western's perspective. But, when I saw Sufism portrayed in the Turkish drama series "Resurrection Ertugrul", I really like it. I like the way they practice Islam. I think it's a mistake to ban Sufism.

I feel like this is becoming more and more mis-represented, this is not a way of worship or a direct way to get close to God, this is to make you forget of this world momentarily only to have God in your mind nothing else, in that way you feel closer to God.

I hope to meet whirling Dervish brothers someday. How lovely they are. May ALLAH increase their protection. May we strengthen our Ummah by being more inclusive of the beauty of love and humble worship in all forms.

There is no evidence in the Quran and Hadeeth that whirling is a form of worship. You can read Quran and Hadeeth and you'll see that this has nothing to do with Islam.

A little history lesson:
The Middle East was full of Sufi’s until 1700 when Muhamid Ali Abdalwahab came from Saudi Arabia and shared his ideology of Wahabism. He killed Sufi’s who did not want to change to Wahabism. Emirates were full of Sufi’s. Imo Sufisim is a really beautiful religion

I danced the whirling dervish in bellydance class. They were weighted and very heavy for a small girl.

The only way to achieve meditation is by reading The Holy Qu'ran, Allah hasn't instructed us with the whirl, nor did prophet Muhammad saw do this or his companions
