The Bat is a 1959 American crime-mystery thriller starring Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead. It is the fourth film adaptation of the story, which began as a 1908 novel The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Rinehart, which she later adapted (with Avery Hopwood) into the 1920 play The Bat.[1][2][3] The first film version of the play was the 1926 American silent film The Bat. The film version was adapted by playwright Crane Wilbur, who also directed.[4]

The Bat was distributed in 1959 on a double bill with the British Hammer film The Mummy.[1] Now in the public domain, The Bat is available for online download.[5]

According to Turner Classic Movies, in an era of films featuring "rampaging aliens and sinister ghouls", The Bat's period piece approach was not a crowd pleaser, although its reputation has improved over time.[1]

For those who might find these notes and links to be overkill, please note the saying, “It is better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.” A phrase I learned early on as an undergraduate attending film school at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

For this presentation I applied a second black and white digital filter over the existing black and white picture to improve or stabilize the existing picture quality while remaining true to the film’s exhibited presentation as it was found online. While I do not claim ownership of this presentation at GenreOnlinenet, I do exercise my right to present it freely, which is open to anyone as The Bat (1959) is in the public domain and therefore is now a part of the collective property of the people. I hope you all enjoy the film. Thank you.
