1. *gratuitous* = _done without good reason, uncalled for_

Also, for those who don't know, 'synonym' is a word with the same or similar meaning -- from my experience, they are very useful when learning a second language, as you learn new words and pick up context clues instead of reading the definition or translation every single time.
