5G networks are becoming a key force for driving innovation across a variety of mainstream sectors and industries. One area benefiting greatly from 5G is the digital transformation in manufacturing. Connectivity is creating the new industry 4.0, manifested through the next-generation 5G factory and 5G manufacturing processes. Sebastiano Di Filippo, Senior Director of Business Development, Qualcomm Europe, Inc., gives insights into the power of 5G for digital transformation of industry at Hannover Messe.

An ecosystem of 5G-connected systems and devices stands to transform industry and manufacturing into a digital, wireless, and mobile future. Increased 5G deployment and 5G standards will bring fast, private, and secure networks to logistics and enterprise, create smart precision agriculture systems, and enable factories of the future for faster connectivity and secure transfer of data.

Flexible manufacturing and smarter warehouses are another key benefactor of 5G, particularly ultra-fast 5G mmWave. New classes of service and performance are possible with 5G mmWave, enabling autonomous guided vehicles, real time asset trackers, monitoring sensors and UHD surveillance cameras to name but a few, for factory and warehouse personnel.

Overall, 5G networks designed around industrial IoT requirements will lead to a boom in productivity and product output across many factory and manufacturing industries. Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC), Ethernet and Time Sensitive Networking (TSN), and substantial positioning features, provide a scalable, optimized 5G network infrastructure built for industrial enterprise. All of this wrapped together with edge cloud computing and AI capabilities will keep data private and secure across the cloud, local networks, and on-device.
