Leaving a comment in November 2024 to indicate this video is still very much relevant and useful! Thank you much

Extremely useful. Khanacademy didn't really take this up to the same extent but finding this, which is even better, I really don't mind. Thanks

Why did you not solve for the complementary homogeneous first to make sure that there were no similar terms in the particular solution? Can you tell just be looking at g(x) that this case cannot happen?

Ok so I have hit a snag. Take the formula y''+4y=7sin(2x). I set yp=Asin(2x)+Bcos(2x), but when solving for this my terms all cancel out. I googled the issue and apparently you are suppose to use yp=Axsin(2x)+Bxcos(2x). My question is how do you know what to set yp equal to?

would be better if you tackled an example containing with combined coefficients

Not to criticize but the problem's I am having are simply not being addressed. I think what you should have concentrated on is finding particular solutions. That's the trick in these types of problems. You say guess, well, I am here to tell you not very many people are going to be able to simply guess what its going to look like and if you guess wrong your screwed 100% of the time.

I know there are methods for determining what a particular solution should look like. You don't have to guess anything and guessing usually only works if you have seen correct forms a thousand times. You should make a video that concentrates purely on finding the form of particular solutions. Everything else is going to be a cake walk for students taking diff-eq.

what if you plug in everything and get 0 = sin(2x) LOL..
