Crucial bee populations are being threatened by habitat loss, chemical pesticides, and disease — but thanks to urban beekeeping, not all hope is lost 🐝

Global bee populations are in decline, but not all hope is lost. Cities can play a part in bringing them back.

Best Bees, the biggest beekeeping service in the U.S., has set up 1,000 beehives on rooftops in 13 cities.

'If you do one thing like have a green rooftop or you have a garden, that's really gonna help pollinators and that'll bring us food all around the world,' explains Noah Wilson-Rich, the founder of Best Bees.

The data shows that bees make more honey in cities, and they tend to live longer as a hive, partly due to there being more flowers in cities than on farms.

Drawn to the health benefits of locally sourced honey, Nicole Lindsey and Timothy Jackson's Detroit Hives has revitalized four lots in their city.

'That fear transformed into love,' Jackson describes the team's foray into beekeeping and educating the community.

In Germany there is a company called pollinature or beehome that sell beehives full of wild bees so you can become a beekeeper for wild bees. It's so amazing and it helps the local wild bees 😊

It's the native bees that need the most help, not the honey bee.

To the people that want to try giving water to the bees, be sure to change it regularly, especially if you live in a tropical area!

Mosquitoes lay their eggs and grow in water so in places where mosquitoes transmit diseases it can be really dangerous to leave water out for a really long time. But as long as you change it daily you should be fine!

I recommend that everyone watches the Rotten episode about imported Honey on Netflix! I will always choose local honey from now on.

Lucy could easily become a beekeeper. You should show her a queen.

When I worked at Krispy Keene frying doughnuts during the transfat scare, we cut down production, but we still threw out the plastic bags used to cover the speed racks full of sugared doughnuts that would be bees who would glut on the sugar. At sunset, the air would cool and find 200 - 400 dead bees EVERY DAY. Since the older bees are the ones who gather nectar, there's no telling how many hives were lost.

So does urban honey, with all the garden flowers, taste different from wild honey?

I don't care for bees at all. They sting and are annoying but it's nice y'all are helping them I guess
