Encase you came here to see how to build the RAID, here are the commands(sorry for no explanation
First, build the raid
sudo mdadm -Cv -l5 c64 -n4 -pls /dev/md0 /dev/sd{a, b, c, d}

Then build the filesystem on this raid(ext4)
mkfs.ext4 /dev/md0

Then check the status, which will likely be rebuilding your hot spare
sudo mdadm -D /dev/md0

Hopefully this bridges the gap that wasnt highlighted.

I've got the same setup (RP4, quad HAT, DietPI). Is there a way to configure running off of either a single SATA drive, or better, the raid (just perform the initial boot off of the Micro SD Card)? I'm guessing this is not possible because of when the drive device(s) becomes available.

Hello, is a can possible mount to SMB drive in the same way as a SATA drive? But instead of connecting a SATA drive, but only a samba drive?

20 MB transfer rate on the local network? Isnt that horribly slow? Do you have gigabit networking?

You should REALLY check out git-annex, which csn use part of different storages, in a safe way. Also temporary disks and USB memory stick. It is like Zfs, but can use cload storages and local storages.

Short, it can support different storages and move the needed parts between. You can even stor a file spread over many types of storages.

Im attempting to build this, but the drives are connected to a powered usb hub, using a sata to usb cable. Randomly while working i get the message drive was removed without ejecting and the system freezes. Any thoughts?
