NOVA leads viewers on a mathematical mystery tour -- a provocative exploration of math's astonishing power across the centuries. We discover math's signature in the swirl of a nautilus shell, the whirlpool of a galaxy and the spiral in the center of a sunflower. Math was essential to everything from the first wireless radio transmissions to the prediction and discovery of the Higgs boson and the successful landing of rovers on Mars. But where does math get its power? Astrophysicist and writer Mario Livio, along with a colorful cast of mathematicians, physicists and engineers, follows math from Pythagoras to Einstein and beyond, all leading to the ultimate riddle: Is math an invention or a discovery? Humankind's clever trick or the language of the universe?

Whether we think we're good with numbers or not, we all use math in our daily lives. The Great Math Mystery sheds fascinating light on how math works in our brains and ponders the ultimate mystery of why it works so well when decoding the universe.

As a complete non-mathematician I appreciate how accessible this documentary made the mathematical concepts that it explained. It is beautiful and amazing that our physical and non physical worlds can exist together in harmony.

Math ideas "Feel Like" they are already there, when they are discovered, because the rules are already there. There is no unreasonable efectiveness in math, math is us putting labels on what is already out there.

I like the comment by one of the scientists who says that the universe isn't just described by numbers, it IS numbers, and the way they behave.

I never seen math explanation as interesting as this. Thank you.

I have never heard of Fibonacci number. But I have always been calculating such sequence of adding the two last numbers starting from 1 in my head whenever I sit alone at nights or in a garden. Does that occur naturally or is it nature's influence in my thoughts? Who may have been battling with nature's mystery unconsciously. I am naturally sensitive, I knew that. And, possibly that may be one of the things that drives my curiosity to know more about who I am, sometimes even sense paranormal experiences.

The entire universe is code. This makes sense to me on a deeper level. While it doesn't mean we're a big video game per se, it's marvellous to contemplate.

Such a great explanation, because of this I've appreciated math than before. Thank you

Can math be use to solve global warming? If there’s a relationship or mathematical relationship of everything around us like water, soil, air..etc then there must be something that we can do to speed up healing for our planet? Icecaps melting resulting flooding because the earth temperature is getting hotter and hotter.. with the rise of water we lost lands and islands. If there’s a mathematical harmony then we could be saving our own extinction. Can anyone do the math please?

The universe works on a math equation that never even ever really ends in the end.

49:00 Humans simply named different _quantities_ (0, 1, 2, 3 etc) & then discovered the unique relationship already in existence among them put in place by our Creator.

Nothing is manmade, not even time. No man exist without the Universe that is within itself made to function as it is.

Pardon me, I came here with good intentions but at 13:53 it shows the fractions of the Octave 2:1=2, Fifth 3:2=1.5 and Fourth 4:3=1.33. The ratio in which the primordial musical notes manifest is not going towards 1.618, but towards 1.

The lines and the needle. He says there are no circles involved, but the needle is always the diameter of the infinite number of circles that could be made. Some of these will include the class of circles that have the diameter needle on the line and the class of circles which do not

The next step after a video like this is a trip to the library and getting some specific books about things of interest. Now showing up at used bookstores, there is Newman's World of Mathematics in four volumes. It is a bit dated but readable. If you are going for a liberal arts college degree, it is still not a bad idea to add in a couple of math courses. I like knot theory, which contains Euler's polyhedron theorem. Another remarkable relationship.

If everything is waveform energy, and a sinus shaped wave is it's projection, it seems logic this ratio manifests itself everywhere around us, no?
