Rob Machado and the Legend's Daughter

Every year Rob Machado heads to Europe to meet up with his teenage daughter, Macy. They live oceans apart. Macy in Reunion Island on the Indian Ocean; Rob on the Pacific. On this occasion, they dropped into our demo center in the Basque Country for a father-daughter session, trying all the different types of waves and enjoying some quality time surfing.

What an incredibly sweet moment to have shared, not just with each other, but with the public, who—based in the comments here—can’t always suspend judgement for the moment necessary to take perspective and temper any gut reactions and steer a more deliberate response or reaction towards the most humility, sensitivity and compassion possible. Mahalo for being so accessible and vulnerable. I was moved by the joy you were sharing with each other as a surfing father and daughter. Surfing with my father are some of my most cherished memories. Life is a bittersweet journey. Loss, separation, distance—they’re part of it, in an endless myriad of ways. No life is free of them. None are immune. Everyone has to find their own way to negotiate those aspects of their journey, and thankfully, some do it with the style, grace, humility and vulnerability that the Machados have shown us. They are, indeed, both legends. Mahalo nunui, my day has been infused with a little more beauty and joy for having watched this. For all the negative comments about him as a dad. Chances are 100% you don't know him, his family or the circumstances. Unless you do (I do), I wouldn't pass ANY judge against him or any dad.
